The European Union has identified Burutu Port in Delta State as a strategic location with the potential to become an international maritime hub under a proposed Sea Link connecting Lagos, the Niger Delta and communities along the River Niger. The disclosure was made by the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, led by Massimo De Luca, during a courtesy visit to Governor Sheriff Oborevwori in Asaba. The proposed route would connect Lagos through the coastal corridor to Burutu and onward through the River Niger, Onitsha and Ajaokuta, opening new possibilities for maritime transportation, trade and economic activity. Represented by the Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, Governor Oborevwori welcomed the proposal and expressed the State Government’s readiness to support its development. The Governor noted that Delta’s extensive waterways provide a strong foundation for expanding the State’s blue economy, while the EU’s interest in Burutu further strengthens the prospects of positioning the port as a gateway for international trade and wider regional connectivity.
