📚 Proven approaches can improve children’s learning. How do we make them work at national scale?
In a new @vox_dev Talks episode, our co-founder @angrist_noam explores how A/B testing, learning data and government partnerships can help bring effective education programs to more children.
The conversation builds on research he co-authored in @ScienceMagazine , setting out an agenda for turning evidence into practice at scale.

A fantastic few weeks in South Africa immersing in data-driven discussions and policy trade-offs led by @DBE_SA. It was a treat to listen and learn from the latest & greatest evidence in South Africa and to present evidence from the @WWHGlobalEd and @youthimpactorg on A/B testing and evaluation at scale.

📣 New paper out in @ScienceMagazine!
Co-authored by our co-founder @angrist_noam, the paper calls for education research to move beyond identifying what works and focus on how proven approaches can be delivered effectively, equitably and at scale.
It also highlights our A/B testing in Botswana, where seven of 12 rapid tests generated efficiency gains, showing how continuous testing can strengthen impact and cost-effectiveness in real time.

Delighted to see this paper out. It's been fun to work on this with @angrist_noam and many colleagues (mostly not on X). Also perfect timing before the @WWHGlobalEd conference next week in Oxford!

As pupils across the UK return to the classroom this September, @BlavatnikSchool's Dr Noam Angrist asks how learning can continue for the millions of children elsewhere whose schools remain closed by conflict, climate or disease ⬇️

ALT Graphic titled “How do we keep children learning when schools have to close?” featuring a portrait of Dr Noam Angrist and an image of a child studying at a desk. A quote from Dr Angrist reads: “Conflict, epidemics and extreme weather can disrupt education with little warning. We cannot predict every crisis, but we can make education systems more resilient before one happens, repair the roof as the sun is still shining.” Dr Angrist is Academic Director of the What Works Hub for Global Education.

📣 We are excited to share that our five-country randomized controlled trial on ConnectEd has been published in @Nature!
The paper explores whether a simple phone call can keep children learning when schools are disrupted. Building on early evidence from Botswana, the study tested ConnectEd’s targeted phone tutorials in India, Kenya, Nepal, the Philippines and Uganda.
📈 The results were consistent across countries: phone tutorials delivered large learning gains, increased the share of learners who could do division by 65% and remained effective when delivered by government teachers.
The study also provides promising evidence for scale. In Nepal and the Philippines, government teachers delivered results comparable to NGO instructors.
The findings show how simple, accessible technology can help education systems protect learning during pandemics, extreme weather and other disruptions—and deliver impact at scale.

✨ So proud of this paper, now published in @Nature! We ran ** 5 ** randomized trials providing education in emergencies w/ NGOs & governments at a time of historic need and uncertainty during the pandemic. Evidence really mattered. We reversed "voltage drops" when scaling across contexts; instead effects improved over time, showing a "learning curve"
