American has been paying $94 per month for her student loans She just had to do her income-driven recertification Her new required payment increased from $94 per month to $934 a month “I'm not paying them, like what the f*ck” Student loans are a scam and textbook predatory lending This situation is very common right now in 2026 to see 10x jumps in payments. Thousands of borrowers are experiencing during IDR recertification Recertification was delayed for years
Due to COVID pauses, legal battles over the SAVE plan that was blocked in courts and later terminated and processing backlogs at the Department of Education Many people hadn’t had their income officially re-evaluated since 2020–2022. The system finally began forcing recertifications in 2026 It pulled your most recent higher income for everyone who has to re-certify. Even if your income only rose modestly since 2017-2020, that multi-year gap makes the new payment jump feel massive Student loans are a scam, because of interest it takes people a lifetime to pay them back

I am not sympathetic to people who took out student loans, avoided repayment, and now want to cry about their responsibility to repay them.

She had basically six years of interest free payments, and she didn’t take advantage of it at all.

The student loan wasn’t a scam when it was paying her Friday night keggers.

She was counting on tax payers bailing her out, so she wouldn’t have to pay them back at all. She lost the gamble. A lot of us have made financial mistakes and had to cope with the fallout. I’m empathetic, but going through stuff like this is how you learn to manage your money better. We lost our house in 2008 through foreclosure and still had student loans to keep paying on. we learned how to get ourselves out of the financial mess we had made and we are better for it. Yes, COVID was a unique situation, but so was 9/11 and the 2008 recession - after a certain point -life goes sideways you need to figure it out. Life sucks sometimes. She made a bet and bet wrong. 🤷🏻‍♀️

She's not a victim of a 'scam' , she's the one who signed the promissory note, took the money, and kept deferring/forbearance instead of hammering the principal when payments were dirt cheap or paused. You borrow knowing it's debt with interest. You don't get to cry 'predatory' when life (and your income) moves on and the re certification math finally catches up. Millions have paid off the old fashioned way so suck it up. Personal responsibility isn't optional just because the government made borrowing too easy Pay what you agreed to, or own the consequences. End of story.

Same people. It was paused for over half a decade and she chose to only pay the $94 a month? Bad decision. What’s her yearly income? I bet she could have paid it off in that 6 years but chose not to because “expendable income” is more fun.

No sympathy! Get a job and then another part time gig, that’s what we did. You pay your debts. If you say you were ill informed, then you should have done the research. No sympathy for them. FUCK ‘EM!

Colleges are very much to blame tuitions, professor pay, sky rocketing admin costs all on the backs of students that take out huge loans for degrees that are useless.

Dear Ann Landers (or @grok): Why wouldn’t actual adults - you know, the college educated, self-important, better than us deplorables ones - not read the financing agreements they signed - even if they didn’t understand in the beginning - and recognize the value in refinancing those loans after graduation? Are you saying those often taxpayer-financed degrees aren’t worth the math they’re predicated on? Signed, A lowly project manager turned cyber specialist who paid for my trade classes and certifications along the way

Smart enough to get into college but don’t read terms of your loan 🤷

They are designed that way. It's part of the larger plan to discourage marriage and family raising. If the govt got out of the student loan business it would drive college prices down fast -unless of course we import a half million Chinese students to prop up their failing system.

And with the miracle of compound interest she will eventually owe more than she borrowed, be technically insolvent but unable to file for bankruptcy. This is how America screws its young people forever into indentured servitude

they have to redo bankruptcy laws and allow students to discharge student loans. it's debt slavery.

Loans are only a scam if you are stupid enough not to use government sources. I used government-sourced loans for my education. The interest rate was super low, like 2.something percent. You took out a loan. Your ignorance led to a bad rate. Sorry, not sorry. Been there, done that, and didn't have an issue.

I went to college by signing away years of my life to the military. My sympathy level is low. In addition to being stupid enough to take out such large loans, what did she think would happen while her loans just accrued interest for years while she made no payments?

When they want. $94. Pay $194 at least. The extra hundred is just a night or two out a month.

My wife took out student loans, and we paid them off. It took a long time and a significant portion of our income, which we would have rather had on a monthly basis. To all of you dipshits that took out student loans, that don’t want to pay them back yourselves, and now want all Americans; poor, middle class, and high income; to pay them off, need to figure your shit out and pay the shit off yourselves or with someone that voluntarily wants to help you, like a spouse or parent. You’re gonna go on living your life is a fucking child and expecting the government to bail you out of everything if you don’t.

The scam starts when they convince you to borrow all that money for a lifestyle instead of an education.

During the 4 year pause on interest during Biden my so. In law worked his ass off and paid off all his student loans in their entirety so he didn’t have to pay any interest at all. Very proud of that young man. They need to teach a semester of financial literacy the first year of college.

I have zero sympathy for her. She's gaming the system & even admitted it, no intention on repaying anything but the bare minimum while conveniently deferring by attending comm. college after a Masters. She must be a therapist w/shitty hand tattoos. As she boo hoo's Capitalism. 🤡

Any American that takes out a loan for education, knowing the risk that the repayment total and/or you’ll never be able to default on that loan under any circumstances and still gets that loan… you are a dumba$$ and no one feels sorry for you!!! If you can’t get a grant and/or scholarship, don’t go to college and then whine on the internet when you have to pay back that said loan.

I’ve solved this and spoken with multiple members of congress offices about it. They want a debt enslaved class. The United States is making hundreds of millions of dollars DAILY in earned interest on the student loan debt. There is NO INCENTIVE to fix the problem for Congress.

I see thousands of dollars in tattoos. I feel nothing for this woman. She should be more responsible with money. Every month I wish I didn't have to pay my credit card for my travel, lodging, food, internet, electricity, etc. But I still pay it.

All these college kids never took a fkn math class?? Compound interest is compound interest 🙄 Just because you dont want to pay the loans doesnt stop the math from mathing!! Stop your underwater basketweaving and go to work! 🤦‍♀️

How is it a scam? Takes loan, payment based on income which is not how other loans work. Then complain when loan goes up with income? Did she expect to pay it back over 200 years?

I'm constantly told that this is the generation that grew up with a keyboard and all the information at their fingertips to be so successful. And then they take out a loan for college that will give them a degree in jobs that don't even exist. And they then sign on the line without understanding the most basic concepts of interest. ZFG. 🤣

That kind of jump would be shocking for anyone. Even if the policy reasons explain part of it, a 10x increase overnight is a huge financial strain and shows how messy the system can get when recertifications are delayed for years....

Apparently she wasn’t taught in school or by her parents what taking out a loan means! As a start: It’s NOT free money!

She was only paying $94? For how long? That's not even enough per month for a small car, let alone a college loan. No wonder her payment skyrocketed. Did she not pay attention to the interest charge? The loan isn't a scam; she's an idiot.
