And the number one answer came from the oldest person I asked. My grandfather. He's 91.
He thought about it for a long time.
Then he said:

I asked him what he meant.
"In 1946, we had nothing," he said. "The American soldiers I met were young and far from home. But they acted like the future was coming, and it was going to be good. After a while, we started to believe them."
I asked him if he thought Americans still believe that.
He nodded slowly.
"Tell them," he said, "not to stop."

Kirsche, I agree with everything you’re saying, but there’s another point I think needs to be made. The people defending this behavior are setting a dangerous precedent without even realizing it. They’re essentially telling everyone that honesty and accountability are conditional upon whether they like you.
And that’s what bothers me the most. If you’re willing to excuse deception because someone shares your political beliefs, supports your favorite creators, or happens to be on your side, then you don’t actually have principles. You have loyalties.
Here’s the question these people should ask themselves: If someone they absolutely despised had done the exact same thing, would they still be defending it? If the answer is no, then their defense was never about what was right or wrong.
And there’s something else. When you dismiss the concerns of people who feel betrayed, you’re effectively teaching them that speaking up about dishonesty will get them more backlash than the person who deceived them. That’s how you create an environment where people become afraid to call out wrongdoing.
You don’t have to hate Ember or demand he disappear from the internet to acknowledge that what happened was wrong. But you absolutely should be consistent about holding people accountable, regardless of whose side they’re on.

In 1952, an English teacher named Cecil Dormand secretly paid for a dirt-poor 11-year-old to take a drama course.
He never told him and the boy didn’t find out until decades later.

We showed an elections official saying “you are the ID” and confirming one could vouch for eight others who were not there.

When my daughter was born she was immediately diagnosed with CAH, a rare hormonal disorder. This prompted us to test our son, who had it too. They both have the virilizing form, which meant their bodies were making too many male hormones.
My son was beginning to show signs of entering puberty at age six. Our only option was puberty blockers, Lupron, big nasty shots, everyday, for nearly 8 years.
Before we began they sat us down for half an hour and explained why, even though this was his best option at a normal life, there were lots of possible side effects and negative outcomes, including kidney failure, physical and neurological developmental problems and a host of others. No one once said it was easy or just a "pause" on puberty. Instead they stressed the seriousness of the treatment. I am happy to say they are both healthy adults today.
So when I started hearing people describe puberty blockers as simple, or just a pause, or easily reversible, with no serious side effects, I knew immediately that was false. How could they get away with saying that, even in the press? Well, when a drug is declared "safe" by the FDA it can be used for any off label purpose. Even though the seriousness of the treatment was known for people with prostate cancer and conditions like my kids had, there simply were no studies at the time for the express purpose of transition. This gave them the fig leaf to say that it was "safe" when every reputable person knew that was false.
So I have known for a long time that the entire trans craze was built on falsehoods.
