On behalf of the British people, I would like to apologise for the slave trade. I am sorry we were the first great power in history to turn its guns on it. I am sorry it cost us around 2,000 sailors to free 150,000 people they would never meet. I am sorry the rest of the world took so long to follow. Slavery did not begin with Britain. It is as old as civilisation. Babylon wrote it into law. Rome built an empire on it. The Vikings sold Englishmen through the slave market at Dublin. In 1625 Barbary corsairs took 60 men, women and children out of a Cornish church; by 1640 Parliament was told 3,000 to 5,000 English people were held in Algiers alone. Every great power of the age took part in the Atlantic trade. Portugal and Spain for a century before an English ship did. Then the Dutch, the French — and the British, who in the eighteenth century carried more than anyone. That is the record. It is not disputed here. Then a nation turned on the trade that had made it rich. Wilberforce's bill was beaten year after year. On 25 March 1807 it passed. Then Britain did the part the critics never mention — it sent the Royal Navy to enforce it. The West Africa Squadron sailed in 1808, two ships for 3,000 miles of coast, and hunted slavers for nearly sixty years. Britain paid Spain and Portugal to open their ships to search. HMS Black Joke ran down the slaver El Almirante in 1829 and found 466 people in her hold. Around 2,000 British sailors died doing it — most of fever, to free people they would never meet. 1,600 slave ships seized. 150,000 Africans set free. In 1833 Parliament borrowed £20 million to end slavery across the Empire. The debt was not finally redeemed until 2015. The United States needed a civil war. Cuba held slaves until 1886. Brazil until 1888 — eighty-one years after Westminster voted. Yes, we took part in the trade. Every power of the age did. None of them fought it like we did. So yes. I will apologise. I am sorry it cost us so much. I am sorry the rest of the world took so long to follow. That is not something you apologise for. That is something you teach. #history #britishhistory #royalnavy #westafricasquadron

“Islamophobia” is just a word used to shield Islam from criticism. #Islamophobia
I am islamophobic because: 1. I don’t want little girls raped. 2. I respect women’s rights. 3. I think halal slaughter is cruel. 4. I hate terrorism. “Islamophobia” is just a word used to shield Islam from criticism. Label me whatever you want, I really don’t give a shit. My morals will never change.

Like Pat, #Islamophobia month passed me by but it’s always worth reminding oneself of what it entails.

You all call yourselves unbiased but aren’t covering what’s currently happening in #Poland Could it be because you don’t want to portray your precious EU in a bad light as they are undoubtedly behind Tusk’s actions? @BBCNews @itvnews @SkyNews

Every word 👏👏👏
Slavery was an evil in which people from every continent and region participated. We should be honest about the whole history, not select the parts that are politically convenient today, especially given Britain's leading role in ending the transatlantic slave trade. If Caribbean countries are asking Britain for a formal apology for Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, will they also be asking the same of the descendants of African kingdoms, rulers and merchants who captured, sold and profited from the trade? On demands for reparations, whether through cash or debt relief, we have been down this track before. Twenty-five years ago, Jubilee 2000, Drop the Debt and Make Poverty History argued that cancelling the debts of poorer countries would give them a fresh start. More than $100 billion of debt was eventually written off, but many of those countries have since built up even bigger debts. Labour are already spending too much on Britain's welfare state, now is not the time for Andy Burnham to be providing global welfare. There is no reason British taxpayers today should be held financially responsible for things that happened generations before any of us were born. And I have even less patience for political elites in commonwealth countries who don’t know how to make their own citizens prosperous now looking for another opportunity to blame Britain. As Prime Minister, Andy Burnham should be Britain’s greatest defender. Instead, he is writing articles saying we need to confront our history (as if we haven't done enough of that) and considering another formal historical apology. Tony Blair already expressed Britain’s deep sorrow and regret for our role in the slave trade nearly twenty years ago. There is no need to do so again. This is all another navel-gazing distraction. The Commonwealth should be looking forward, not endlessly backwards. That means economic partnerships to make us all richer and deeper military and security cooperation against common threats. If every Commonwealth summit becomes an exercise in presenting Britain with demands for cash then we need to start asking if it is worth the effort.

Every single sentence in your post is untrue. Labour’s 2002 ‘deal’ had very little long-term impact on migrants trying to sneak into the UK by lorry/container/vehicles. It simply moved from Sangette to other routes. Between 2014-2019 55,000 came in that way — an underestimate since many came in undetected and disappeared into society. Unlike boat people, nearly all of whom are counted. So it’s an obvious nonsense to say people weren’t being sent back because nobody was arriving. Tens of thousands were arriving. They switched to small boats when major advances in technology, perimeter defence of lorry/container parks and detection made lorries etc too risky to take. That’s why, from 2018 onwards, the small boat numbers grew fast. Nothing to do with EU, Brexit, Dublin rules, fairy dust etc. Why do you peddle such falsehoods?
2002 deal Labour struck with 🇫🇷 helped tackle lorry migrants. But small boats rocketed post-Brexit: 299ppl 2018 to 45,774 in 2022. When in EU, Dublin Rg was a deterrent as ppl arriving illegally wld be returned, so v.few came. We didn't send them back because they weren't here

Oh dear, how sad, never mind. 🙂🇬🇧
🚨BREAKING🚨 New polling conducted for City AM, published in the last hour, shows that two thirds of Brits would OPPOSE rejoining the EU if it meant a commitment to adopt the Euro at any point in the future. Which it would. This is terminal for the Rejoin campaign. Terminal.

The Czech Prime Minister clearly forgot that he shouldn’t be saying the quiet bit out loud. #Brexit #EU
🚨🇪🇺 NEW: Various EU leaders say they would welcome Britain rejoining the EU Here’s what they said: 🇨🇿 Czechia’s Prime Minister Andrej Babiš: “Yes, of course, we need more money” 🇸🇮 Slovenia’s Prime Minister Janez Janša: “The UK leaving was one of the biggest catastrophes for the EU in the entire time of its existence” 🇨🇾 Cyprus’ President Nikos Christodoulides: “If Britain is ready to come back, we are ready to welcome them” 🇱🇻 Latvia’s Prime Minister: “I think Britain should come back to the family” 🇪🇸 Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez: “I applaud it, we are better united” 🇧🇬 Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Rumen Radev: “Of course, but this time UK must learn its lesson” 🇩🇰 Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen: “Of course, always” 🇱🇹 Lithuania’s President Gitanas Nausėda: “Yes, absolutely” 🇭🇷 Croatia’s Prime Minister Andrej Plenković: “Are they keen to come back?” 🇪🇺 EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas: “Of course, all our friends are welcome to join” 🇳🇱 Netherlands’ Prime Minister Rob Jetten: “In the end, it’s up to the British people to decide what that relationship looks like” [@SkyNews]

This is a problem for the EU lobby. Now we have left we can see what has happened. Have we done well? No Have we done better than comparable EU economies? Yes Did we make the most of Brexit? No Can we do more? Yes Is the EU the slowest growing trade block in the world? Yes Would we have to pay tens of billions £ to be a member of the EU? Yes Would we have to scrap most, if not all, of the 70+ trade deals we have done since we left? Yes Is our trade with the EU ⬆️ since we left? Yes Is our trade with non-EU countries ⬆️ even more? Yes
Bit tricky for Burnham and the Rejoin spinners as the IMF publishes their growth for 2027: Brexit ‘catastrophe’ damaged the UK, right? After ten years, we are in much worse straits than the EU? Ah-no. BUT,says Andy, we’ll pay the EU to run us again &we’ll be BILLIONS better off!

Is the Andy Burnham who spouted bollocks about Brexit and Russia the same Andy Burnham who wants to stop misinformation online? Surely we need to know?
14
Burnham has such contempt for the British public that he attempted to mislead us by implying that Russian interference had actually affected the #Brexit referendum in an ill judged attempt to smear the result in the hope of boosting the rejoin campaign. He’s out of his depth.
Oh dear. Andy Burnham's attempt to smear Brexit as the product of a sinister Russian disinformation campaign has already been exposed as nothing more than… disinformation. During a car-crash set of interviews this morning, Foreign Office minister Stephen Doughty admitted that no Kremlin attempt to interfere with Brexit had succeeded. Not that Doughty didn't try his damnedest to avoid stating the obvious. ✍️ Steerpike Article | spectator.com/article/burnha… | @MrSteerpike

Plenty of foreign interference that you could highlight in the right hand column @andyburnham #Brexit
"the Russians swung the Brexit vote" 🤦‍♂️ #GrubbyBurnham
14
Burnham clutching at straws trying to discredit the 2016 referendum result. Is he really trying to say that 17.4 million people were persuaded to vote Leave because of supposed Russian interference. If so, he clearly doesn’t know the British people #Brexit
Andy Burnham becomes first PM to confirm Russian interference in Brexit referendum @campbellclaret and @RoryStewartUK's exclusive interview with @andyburnham on tomorrow's episode of Leading is out in full at midnight.

A good example of why the right should opt for a new path in the future. If you’re not a British national and can’t support yourself, don’t expect the British taxpayer to step in. The Conservatives clearly think otherwise.
🚨NEW: The Welsh Tories have voted against Reform UK's motion to deny social housing to foreign nationals

Perhaps the government’s new ministry for truth should start with itself and stop peddling lies about #Brexit
Exclusive: The proof the Government has been lying to us about Brexit. In real terms the economy has grown, exports have risen – all according to official figures. facts4eu.org/news/2026_oct_b… Pls re-post!

If this is true and I’m not doubting you June, why is the British government allowing France to get away with what they’re doing @ShabanaMahmood @Nigel_Farage @ZiaYusufUK #IllegalImmigrants #StopTheBoats
Talking to a French coastguard contact (Gus) today - his English not perfect but the point was clear: So I looked it up he's right! ♦️♦️♦️♦️♦️ Under UN Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) and UNCLOS, the duty of a coastal state is to STOP overcrowded, unseaworthy vessels leaving its ports. 👇👇👇👇👇👇 If such a vessel is at sea and a French vessel is the first to it, the duty is to take it back to the nearest safe port - which is France. It is NOT the duty of the UK to then take over the chaperoning of an unsuitable vessel across the Channel. Stop them at the point of departure. Return them to France if intercepted by French assets. That's what maritime safety law actually says. It's all in The UN document 👇👇👇👇 SOLAS Article 98 /Chapter V

Andrew Neil and Liam Halligan paint a very gloomy picture of the UK economy and it appears the #Labour government are not doing us any favours either. In Liam’s words they are guilty of ‘fiscal mismanagement’. #LabourOut
