New Mexico’s $75B sovereign wealth fund, built on oil and gas money, is on track to become the largest in the U.S. by 2030. How do you diversify from oil and gas into a new generation of companies and industries? I went to New Mexico for 24 hours to see how the state is working with the private sector to attract some of the world’s most innovative hard tech companies, and how it’s building on a scientific legacy that goes all the way back to Los Alamos. New Mexico has become the first state to offer universal no-cost child care, and is working with community colleges to train local residents for jobs in advanced manufacturing and emerging industries. FEATURED IN THIS EPISODE • @ADoricko founder and CEO of @RainmakerCorp • Adam Grosser, chairman and managing partner of @UPPartnersVC • Carrie von Muench, co-founder and COO of Pacific Fusion • Rep. Meredith Dixon, New Mexico House of Representatives • Reliable Robotics • Brian Adamsco, founder and managing partner of UP Abundance

The state of New Mexico is putting $2 billion into getting startups to build there. I flew out with @UPPartnersVC and their New Mexico-focused fund, UP.Abundance, to see what that actually looks like. We went inside a $1B fusion facility breaking ground with @_Pacific_Fusion, cloud-seeding drones with @RainmakerCorp, and autonomous aircraft with Reliable Robotix . New Mexico state has the second-largest sovereign wealth fund in the US with $75B under management. Silicon Valley might be where you raise, but that doesn’t mean it has to be where you build. New INSIDE Startups episode out now.

One of the highlights of my career

@UPPartnersVC is betting that some of the most ambitious startups of the next decade won’t be built in Silicon Valley. Through UP.Abundance, their New Mexico-focused fund, they’re backing companies building in the physical world and helping them expand into the state. There’s serious capital behind it. New Mexico has a $75B sovereign wealth fund, with $2B allocated across venture funds to invest in startups and help bring them into the state. I flew out with the UP.Partners team to see what that looks like on the ground. A $1B fusion R&D facility breaking ground with Pacific Fusion. Cloud-seeding drones with Rainmaker. Autonomous aircraft with Reliable Robotics. When you’re building companies like these, where you build starts to matter a lot more. New INSIDE Startups episode out now.

New Mexico is trying to convince some of Silicon Valley’s most ambitious startups to build there instead. I flew out with the @UPPartnersVC team to see how they’re doing it through UP.Abundance. The state holds the second largest sovereign wealth fund in the US, with $75 billion AUM. $2 billion is being allocated across venture funds investing in companies that build or expand in New Mexico. We spent the day with Pacific Fusion, Rainmaker and Reliable Robotics, three companies working across fusion energy, cloud seeding and autonomous aircraft. For startups like these, access to land, infrastructure, talent and incentives can have a huge influence on where they build. Can a state offer enough to convince founders to move somewhere they otherwise wouldn’t? New INSIDE Startups episode dropping soon.

My first conversation with @adamgrosser, a Silicon Valley OG. Adam has had a front row seat to what Silicon Valley is today from being at the centre of personal computing in the early days of Apple in the 1980s as Director of Engineering to directing products at LucasFilm in 1990s and investing in the still early internet days in the 2000s at @FoundationCap. Adam went on to be a Managing Director at prominent technology focused private equity firm SilverLake and created the Up Summit, an exclusive annual event for the future of transportation. He was also a part of building and scaling two multibillion dollar companies in the 1990s. He is also a 4x Forbes Midas list investor. He now runs @UPPartnersVC which he founded six years ago around the thesis of future of transportation enabled by software. Up Partners has been an investor in companies like @hermeuscorp (founded by @AJ_Piplica), Reliable Robotics, @Axiom_Space , @SkydioHQ , @westmagco , Pacific Fusion and Beta to name a few. What makes him unique and extremely hard to bullshit to is the fact that he builds cars, airplanes and boats in his workshop in San Carlos which I had the chance to check out, this is where the technical knowhow of founders gets tested. It is not a team of 10 technicians working on these projects, it is a team of just Adam plus a couple of contractors here and there. For investors in frontier tech, this would be the equivalent of touching grass. Adam is one of the kindest and most generous humans I have come across in the industry, still a student at heart who is insatiably curious and genuinely interested in other people. Perhaps one of the reasons he has been so successful. In this wide ranging conversation we cover a bit of Silicon Valley history, what it was like working with Steve Jobs, his time in media through LucasFilm and Sony, how venture capital has changed, how Adam keeps up and how to build a successful lasting venture firm. With the Rainmaker himself @ADoricko hours after sharing their huge results of their work in Alaska. #Abundance
Rainmaker just produced ~19M gallons of water in Alaska via next-gen cloud seeding over 3 hours of operations. We are the first company to provably produce precipitation in Alaska. As promised, we’ve linked our white paper and relevant data. In the future, Rainmaker will protect and restore glaciers with man-made snowfall. Immediately, this demonstration shows how Rainmaker will add new water to the Colorado River and Great Salt Lake in the coming months. We turned around this analysis and white paper just a couple days after operating. There are many data sources I want to deepen our understanding of the atmosphere and increase our provable production; we’re building the instruments to collect that data in subsequent operations. But at Rainmaker, we won’t tout LOIs, simulations, or lab tests. What matters is physically measuring that you’ve affected the atmosphere; proving that we’ve produced water. We prefer sharing only the tech that has proven to make more water for farms, industries, and ecosystems in need. Expect a regular cadence of these from us as we build the best atmospheric science lab in the world. Feedback is welcome in the interim. Rainmaker Century. rainmaker.com/blog/alaska-va…

Today we placed posters around the country telling the story of what it means to Become a Rainmaker. Modifying the weather requires frontier research. Meteorology, physics, machine learning, solid state radar and optics systems, we are hiring for across all these disciplines But, no amount of novel hardware or hours spent in the lab can actually modify the weather unless our systems are tested and deployed by humans in the field Until teams of gritty, relentless, disciplined mountaineers deploy our tech in remote locations during freezing snowstorms—it’s all just theory. And Rainmaker is in the business of contacting reality. So we are hiring teams of Forward Operating Specialists to bring theory into practice again this coming winter. In the hardest conditions imaginable, the FOS is responsible for using all the systems Rainmaker has built. They are Rainmakers in the truest sense of the word. They are the ones who work with nature. They are the ones who modify the weather. Their field work is the final factor determining whether our operations produce more water. It is a tough job in service of a beautiful mission. We are in search of gritty, soulful, dutiful people who want to work with nature, harness the elements, befriend the locals, and bring water where it’s needed most. Become a Rainmaker. More info in the replies.
