In @Econlib, @Reinsch84 pens a thorough review of my @EncounterBooks THE CIVILIZATION OF COMMERCE. "Gregg observes that much of the case for understanding commercial civilization turns on what leading Scottish thinkers identified in their developing society in the eighteenth century." 1/3

I'm in Washington, D.C. this week giving a policy brief on the consequences of federal deficits and debt. In the fiscal year that just ended, the federal government ran a deficit of nearly $2 trillion, which is about $5,800 for every American. How do debt and deficits impact average Americans? 1. Interest costs are crowding out everything else. Washington paid more than $1.3 trillion in interest on the debt last year, roughly $4,000 per person, and that's money not going to roads, research, defense, or tax relief. 2. Borrowing costs ripple into daily life. Heavy government borrowing can push up interest rates, which shows up in mortgages, car loans, credit cards, and what small businesses pay to grow. 3. Less room to respond to the next crisis. With debt now above $40 trillion, we have less fiscal cushion for the next recession, pandemic, or emergency. 4. Today's deficits impact future choices between higher taxes, spending cuts, or more borrowing, and younger Americans carry most of that obligation. Looking forward to good conversations this week about how we change course. How do you suggest we get our fiscal house in order? #FiscalPolicy #NationalDebt #PublicPolicy #Economy

Three great scholars.
Are Tariffs as Bad as Economists Say? They’re Worse. Are the President's tariffs protecting American industry, or making the economy less efficient and more vulnerable to political favoritism? On this episode of The Economist Next Door, host @DrPaulMueller sits down with AIER Senior Fellow @Dave_Hebert and @Philmagness of the Independent Institute to examine the economic and political costs of protectionism. They discuss the shifting landscape of Trump's tariff policy, the realities of American manufacturing, the Jones Act, rare earth minerals, and the case for free trade. They also explore how tariffs create opportunities for cronyism, entrench special interests, and distort markets, often in ways that outlast the policies that created them.

1/10 In my latest for @AIER, I argue that America already has a conception of the common good, rooted in its founding. It is ordered liberty, sustained by constitutional institutions. The real threat to that common good came from progressivism, not classical liberalism.

.@DrSamuelGregg, author "The Civilization of Commerce," on Americans' embrace of socialism: "There are some people who use the phrase to describe what we might call European social democracy, which is sort of a lite form of socialism -- I think, for example, that's what a lot of Americans have in mind."

While the federal budget process may look orderly (albeit elaborate) on paper, in practice it's a mess. @Dave_Hebert's @aier explainer helps make sense of it & how it contributes to our present predicament. aier.org/article/how-the-fed…

Have you ever wondered how Congressional budgeting *actually* works? I spent a summer working for the Senate Committee on the Budget and wrote my dissertation on the microfoundations of public finance. In the latest installment of @aier's Explainer Series, I bring practice and theory so YOU can understand this opaque process. "Surprisingly interesting for a boring topic," said one esteemed reader. aier.org/article/how-the-fed…

“With his characteristic clarity and depth, Samuel Gregg offers nothing less than a case for our civilization. By showing the reader what is distinct about the achievement of commercial society, he sketches a path toward renewal, and away from the despair and paralysis that have overtaken our conception of possible futures. This is an essential book.” —@DavidBahnsen The Civilization of Commerce, by @aier's @DrSamuelGregg, offers a vigorous defense of the market economy, a civilizational achievement that expands freedom, liberty, and justice, and leads to richer lives. Drawing on the thought of Nobel economist F. A. Hayek and Enlightenment thinker Adam Smith, The Civilization of Commerce explains how market economies create opportunity and prosperity for society at large.
