We remember and honor those who died in the Tree of Life Synagogue attack, a few blocks from here in Pittsburgh, eight years ago today.
Eight years later, we remember those lost to an act of hate that forever changed our city. We honor their memory by continuing to stand together in compassion, unity, and our commitment to a safer future.

It's World Series time! Before radio and TV broadcasts, if you wanted to watch the big game but couldn't attend, you might keep track via a "Playograph." This mechanical device was manually operated by people working behind the board, showing crowds where the ball and players were at any given time.

When you type an unpublished idea into a chatbot or coding agent, could it end up being used by the company that built the model—or a rival who asks the right question a year later? And what can you do to reduce the risk? No setting makes a chatbot fully private, but experts suggest steps that can make leaks much less likely: scim.ag/4sihqtz

It was wonderful hosting MajGen (ret) Charles Dunlap for our Lawfully Speaking series, about Navigating Law, Technology and Ethics in Modern Conflict. His remarks about AI, speed & the evolving role of JAGs in vetting targets were especially thought-provoking. (And I'm grateful for the mention of my book Power to the People!) @cmist_cmu @CarnegieMellon sites.duke.edu/lawfire/2026/…

Sen McCormick’s speech about U.S. values, tech, innovation and the competition with China was optimistic & inspirational. Key points: strengthen U.S. research funding, innovate closely w allies, increase mass production in the U.S. , prepare for the changing character of war. “America is good, and we should be unabashedly proud of that.”

“People will have to provide resources to machines for them to continue to make progress.”The potential for vast advances in science is exciting; but reliably operating in humanity’s best interests should come first. We social scientists & humanists need to step up.
