Bird songs share surprising similarities with human music and speech, according to a large-scale study comparing vocalizations across hundreds of bird species and dozens of human languages. The findings in Science suggest that these similarities may arise partly from shared biological mechanisms, rather than vocal learning ability alone. Learn more: scim.ag/4ikVRUr

India has cut the cost of 137 life-saving cancer drugs by up to 90%. India's government ruled that people couldn't reasonably afford cancer treatment and forced pharmacies to drastically lower their prices.

"Nothing is free in biology.” Chronic stress reshapes how the brain allocates a limited energy budget—potentially shaping thoughts, emotions, behavior, and long-term mental health. A compelling framework for understanding stress as an energy-allocation problem. 🧠⚡ – at Tartumaa, Eesti
Today on TSEE, we share a new model that connects the body's energy demand, how stress (dis)allocates energy, and how this is related to our behaviors, thoughts, emotions, and mental health. Guest writer @sequencemyneuro from our group provides an overview of the Allostatic Triage model of Psychopathology (ATP Model). This model helps explain how our brains manage the body's limited energy budget. And how stress may contribute to the development of disease symptoms over time. Nothing is free in biology. So stress costs energy. Chronic stress changes how our energy flows and is distributed. We now think that this leads to energy patterns that show up as thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that—over time—negatively impacts our mental and physical health. Parker's ATP Model provides a framework to understand how dynamic energy patterns shape our lives and our health. tseenergy.substack.com/p/can…

MATTER OF GREAT PRIDE FOR INDIAN SCIENCE!   Ashoke Sen becomes the first Indian to win the prestigious Oskar Klein Medal (2026), jointly  awarded by Stockholm University and the Nobel Committee for Physics of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for his pioneering work in String theory.   deccanherald.com/science/ben…   String theory gives a unified description of all matter and the forces between them based on the postulate that the elementary constituents of matter are tiny one dimensional (string-like) objects instead of point particles. Sen’s breakthrough work has shown that multiple string theories are all different versions of a single underlying theory.   Incidentally, I met Ashok Sen for the first time, when both of us were elected  as FRS (Fellows of Royal Society) in 1998. Ashoke ( nominated by Stephen Hawking himself) was young 42 yrs and I was an oldie - 55 yrs though!   What struck me was Ashoke’s  incredible simplicity. His wife Sumathi Rao has reportedly said that Ashoke bought his first suit and needed some assistance to wear his first tie for that prestigious 1998 FRS ceremony in London, when one signs in the same book that Sir Isaac Newton has signed.   A film made on the life and work of Ashoke Sen, when we at the H K Firodia Award in Science & Technology honoured him in 2005 in Pune, will inspire all our budding scientists - showing how science & simplicity goes together. youtu.be/CoVc5cM5XlU?si=vQNQ… We all feel so so proud Ashoke! @PMOIndia @NITIAayog @PrinSciAdvOff @IndiaDST @CSIR_IND @ictstifr @PuneIntCentre @kvijayraghavan

Seeing a lot of growing raw hatred against India, Indians, Hindus, Indian-Americans, etc. for no reason. Would be happy to have anyone who feels that hatred quietly unfollow me. Simple. Clean. Thanks in advance.

Promising finding. A natural defense pathway that limits arterial plaque could complement statins and other therapies-but key questions wll be whether it works in humans, how durable the effect is, & whether it can be safely enhanced without unwanted immune or metabolic effects. – at Tartumaa, Eesti
NIH researchers have discovered a natural defense mechanism that may help the body prevent plaque from building up inside arteries, opening new possibilities for treating atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, a leading cause of death in the U.S.

Wondering what implications this might have for taller #humans ? Fascinating evidence that larger #dogs show accelerated #epigenetic aging—could body size influence the pace of molecular #aging more broadly? #research #academia #genetics #epigenome – at Tartu, Eesti
Why do large dogs tend to live shorter lives than their smaller counterparts? The answer may be written into their epigenome, according to a new study in Science. The findings reveal that larger and male dogs undergo accelerated molecular aging, with pronounced DNA methylation on the X chromosome and at transposable elements. Learn more: scim.ag/3VZtl3f
