"There's no innovation, so it can't be fragmented."
I joined the panel "From Crisis to Resilience: Strategic Health Industries for Health Security" at the #WHS2026 World Health Summit in Berlin.
In parts of the world, the fear is that innovation is getting fragmented. From where I sit in Nairobi, the problem is the opposite: there's too little to fragment. Most African countries invest less than 0.5% of GDP in R&D. COVID-19 only made that gap visible, as we waited for vaccines developed and made elsewhere.

17 catastrophic global threats will shape the health of the next generation. But they are not inevitable.
I was honoured to serve as a Commissioner on the Lancet Commission on 21st Century Global Threats to Health. I worked alongside 34 leaders from health, economics, security, governance and technology. Together we set out a practical agenda for reducing risk and building resilience in an increasingly uncertain world. I'm glad African perspectives and evidence helped shape it, because many of these threats will be felt most sharply on our continent.

A question about your health can come at any time.
Maybe you are not sure whether a symptom is normal. Maybe you need information about contraception. Maybe you are looking for help after experiencing violence. Or perhaps you simply do not know where to start.
For many people, the first step is not walking into a health facility. It is finding someone or something they can turn to for reliable information, guidance and a connection to care.
This is where technology can make a difference.
At the Africa HealthTech Summit in Kigali, Rwanda, RHNK spotlighted Nena na Binti, our platform that connects people to SRHR information, counselling, psychosocial support and other services, while linking them to healthcare and support where needed.
The summit, held under the theme “Wellness for All,” created an opportunity to look at @NenaNaBinti not simply as a call centre, but as a health technology innovation built around a very human problem: how do we make reliable SRHR information and support easier to reach?
Through @NenaNaBinti , someone can start a conversation from wherever they are, get information and guidance, and, where necessary, be connected to a healthcare provider or other support within their proximity.
And being part of a health technology space also gave us the opportunity to step back and ask: How can we make this better?
Across the summit, conversations kept coming back to a few important ideas: technology should solve real problems, communities should have a voice in how systems are designed, digital platforms should work alongside existing health systems, and data privacy and sovereignty cannot be an afterthought.
One message particularly resonated: impact is not simply about reach. It is about whether technology actually makes someone’s life easier.
Our visit to HDI’s community-led SOGIE-SC centre and call centre in Kigali reinforced this. We saw how technology and community-based approaches can work together to create safer entry points to information and SRHR services, particularly for people who may face stigma or barriers within conventional systems.
For Nena na Binti, the next chapter is already taking shape.
RHNK is working towards strengthening and complementing the call centre and our digital platforms with a chatbot designed around the real information and support needs of the people who use these services.
The goal is not to replace the human connection that makes Nena na Binti what it is.
It is to create another door.
A door that can help someone find accurate information, understand their options, navigate services and know where to turn while connecting them to human support when they need it.
Because the best health technology is not technology for technology’s sake.
It is technology that meets people where they are, protects their information, responds to their realities and helps them get closer to the care they need.

What will the next five years make possible?
By 2030, CARTA’s ambition is to see:
✅ More African early-career researchers equipped to lead.
✅ More universities with sustainable, research-conducive environments.
✅ More research powered by responsible digital innovation.
✅ More evidence translated into policy, practice, and societal impact.
✅ Stronger, more connected African research ecosystems.
These are the changes that will turn CARTA’s 2026–2030 Strategic Plan from priorities into impact.

The new strategic cycle expands CARTA’s focus across researchers, institutions, innovation, knowledge, and ecosystems, recognizing that a resilient African research ecosystem requires more than developing individual researchers. It requires strong institutions, connected knowledge, enabling technologies, and partnerships that can sustain and amplify impact.
Together, they represent a connected approach to strengthening Africa’s research ecosystem — building on what CARTA has achieved and creating pathways for greater impact in the years ahead.

Yesterday, we joined a community dialogue at Reuben Centre in Mukuru kwa Reuben, engaging local business associations, PTAs and teachers on strengthening school meals in urban informal settlements.
We are privileged to contribute to the project, “Scaling the Integration of Micro and Small Enterprises and Smallholder Farmers into the School Meals Program in Urban Informal Settlements in Kenya,” led by African Population and Health Research Center, International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and Wasafiri.
Through this partnership, #IFJAD is contributing to community engagement and nutrition SBCC, including developing accessible nutrition messages and materials in Sheng. We are also supporting community organized groups (COGs) and local business associations (LBAs) as they work with schools and communities to strengthen the case for schools to procure from local businesses.
School meals can improve nutrition while creating markets for smallholder farmers and local food businesses. When these systems are strengthened, they can also advance food safety, support local livelihoods and contribute to more resilient urban food systems.
We are grateful to APHRC for the trust and partnership. There is a lot to learn from communities, COGs and LBAs, and we look forward to continued collaboration towards stronger outcomes.

Yesterday, CARTA unveiled the program's Strategic Plan 2026–2030 at its annual Partners' Forum, held this year in Lilongwe, Malawi.
While implementation has been underway since January, the occasion marked an important moment to formally unveil the strategy and bring partners together around the direction we are already pursuing.
Building on the successes, lessons, and opportunities of the last three strategic phases, the new strategy advances CARTA's ambition: from strengthening individual researchers to building sustainable, research-conducive institutions and a more resilient African research ecosystem.
Over the coming days, we'll unpack the vision, mission, and five strategic priorities shaping this next chapter.
