Patrick Stewart brought a new level of performance to science fiction with his peerless performance as Jean-Luc Picard. He was also a genius on stage--I saw his Christmas Carol and two Pinter plays I disliked but for him. And he wrote a remarkable memoir. What a loss.

Biglaw has adapted before & will continue to do so. But the current environment definitely raises the likelihood of more firms of longstanding pedigree & success going the way of Weil. Evolve or be eaten.
I think the Weil fallout might point to the fact (which others have pointed out) that the traditional law firm partnership structure does not work anymore. The truth is a Biglaw firm is a rather commoditised support platform that serves rainmaking partners with back office operations, supply of labour from associates, counsels and service partners. Who controls the cash flow effectively controls the firm and if the rainmakers head for the door it leads to a bank run type scenario. In most firms the power has shifted majorly towards a few rainmakers particularly in PE and M&A and that creates a huge key person risk when they decide to pack their bags. I’m not sure what the solution to this is but I imagine it’s only going to get worse when the platform that firms offer get even more commoditised by AI which will do more and more of what junior to mid-level lawyers are currently doing. Maybe the answer is building some real tech moat within your firm? Or just being able to predict market trends really well and investing correctly in the right practices like Kirkland.

Baseball is quite literally one of the only reasons to listen to the radio. Besides going in person, it's the ideal way to consume the product. Nothing brings the innate rhythm, cadence, & beauty of the game to life like listening to a radio call & imagining the field of play.

Patrick Stewart & Walter Koenig in the space of 3 days is a lot for the Trek world. Let us be thankful they both had the opportunity to live long & prosper.

It's kinda amazing how with all the population movement from the Rust Belt to Sun Belt since the 1970s, sports team allegiances have remain firmly anchored in the old Midwest and Northeast. Not just for the Packers and Steelers and Bills. Lots of teams in various sports. – at Gettysburg, PA
This has been a problem in Sun Belt markets since professional sports arrived (Atlanta is the ultimate case study in visiting fans taking over their stadiums). Feels like it’s gotten way worse with the rise of SeatGeek, etc. Fundamentally bad dynamic for the leagues long-term.

So, you're saying this scheme can't work in practice because it doesn't work in theory?
Let me again explain why ranked-choice voting makes the two Dan Sullivans in the Alaska Senate race moot. Ranked-choice voting means that you rank candidates as your first and second choice.

I appreciate the positive attention from new corners of the political Twitterverse. But if you’re a Democrat who opposes these actions by Republicans but supports any of them from your own party, you also missed the point of the article.

Voting is important. You should vote. More important than voting is what you tell yourself about your vote. Your actual vote may not matter much. It's one of many. What you tell yourself about what you're doing shapes you.

There should be a lot more inquiry about why the AK Supreme Court said in June than an opinion would follow in the Dan Sullivan case explaining the decision to put him on the ballot. And yet 4 months later there's no opinion on the eve of the election. alaskanews.com/c/alaska-news…

A prosecution in upstate N.Y., publicized by Burr, helped flip the state. Fs were confused. JA wanted peace with France, much of the party didn’t.
