Reparations for slavery? Where is that urgency for the girls raped by Pakistani Muslim gangs in Britain, or the women still being trafficked and exploited today? Where is their compensation, and accountability for the officials who failed them?
The dead make convenient villains. Confronting living perpetrators, and the institutions that failed their victims, requires rather more courage than another speech about Britain’s past. Oh and btw, if we’re going to put history on trial, we might acknowledge Britain’s role in suppressing the slave trade. Selective memory is a curious foundation for moral superiority.

Crazy. Natural gas costs roughly 10x more in Europe than in America.
Europe, especially Germany, inflicted this economic carnage on itself, leaving it wide open to energy shocks. Russian gas dependence. Fracking bans. Nuclear shutdowns. Net Zero zealotry.
These were deliberate political decisions, not acts of God.
European households and businesses pay the heavy price while the politicians responsible - Merkel, von der Leyen and the others - walk away richer and untouched.
How do they get away with this? @JavierBlas
The fridges are leased and monitored remotely, hence the internet connectivity. Insurance is also factored into the lease arrangement. Food companies have passed risk onto 3rd parties who cut too many costs, like security.
This what growth looks like in one US state.

John Swinney is determined to be the last person to catch up. It leadership from the back seat of the bus. The SNP have gone from “It’s Scotland’s Oil” to “Hit us harder and we’ll call you a colonist”.
Pretty much everyone gets it now. We've done renewables wrong. We need fossil fuels. Cheap energy is everything. "Rosebank oil revenues are banked — so get on with it"

Madness. The windmill suppliers should be asked to provide reliable power only to the grid. How they do that is their problem.
It’s a VAT dodge as Public Sector can’t recover it from a Scottish company. Making Indian IT 20% cheaper than any local company. The Scottish government buys nearly no indigenous software. Public Sector is biggest trade barrier to Scottish companies.

BREAKING: 🇫🇷 French lawmakers just voted 11-10 in favour to introduce a tax on internet data.
If approved, Netflix, Youtube, Meta and all internet businesses will have to pay a tax of 5.5 cents for every GB users consume in France.
That’s nearly $12 Billion in new revenue for the government.

Mindblowing chart from OBR. In 2029 real household disposable income per person expected to be just 1% higher than in 2019. What an unbelievably awful decade. It used to grow by 2%+ every year, not 1% in 10 years.

If, by the way, the same situation that just happened in Brazil had happened but with the parties switched -- if Bolsonaro had won last night's election and then a pro-Bolsonaro judge sent the Federal Police to seize Lula's passport and bar him from leaving the country -- every major western media outlet and liberal NGOs would be screaming about the authoritarian attack on Brazil's elections and the destruction of basic freedoms.

This is what worries me. About France and about the UK...
"No one can tell when, exactly, a crisis might arrive: it depends on the country and its politics. Yet once investors conclude that a country cannot conceivably afford to pay the debt, interest rates will surely start to jump, the mechanism through which practically every financial crisis plays out. We are in the phase where everybody still pretends that the situation is under control, and that all that needs to happen is for governments to save a bit of money here and there. In practice, though, ministers of all stripes find this hard"
And
"Looking at the presidential candidates in France today ahead of the election next April, I struggle to see how the country will end up with a government that succeeds in doing all of the following: bringing the budget deficit under control; avoiding social unrest; complying with European rules; and staying in the eurozone. Something has to give here."
And
"Yet what many Europeans, including politicians, don’t understand is the relationship between debt and membership of the eurozone. Put simply: you can’t default on your debt and expect to keep the euro. Debt serves as collateral for the money the banking system gets from the ECB. If a country defaults on its debt, the banking system inevitably freezes up....
... France defaulting on its debt would likely lead to a French exit from the euro. Should we ever get to this point, the ensuing financial crisis would dwarf everything we have ever experienced. Financial institutions would fail all over the world. For its part, the eurozone might not survive, as other countries default on their debts and crash out in turn. Ironically, one of the European countries most affected in this scenario would be the UK. Despite not being a member of the EU, let alone the eurozone, Britain’s capital market would be deeply vulnerable to chaos across the Channel."
Does anyone believe @UKLabour has the economic nous to navigate this when our own finances are so shaky?

Net zero added £140.3bn to Britain's electricity bills in 2002–24: £2,286 for the average household. Modelled, in 2024 prices. Nobody official counts it. Parliament should require a yearly statement, with data anyone can check.
