Maybe some of you knew about those but it's the first time I've come across them and it blew my mind.
So we're on a beach in the Philippines and we kept seeing these egg-like green balls in the seagrass. At first I thought they were plastic because they looked kind of like plastic toy capsules.
But there were so many of them all over the beach that either some kid had lost the biggest toy collection in history, or something else was going on.
So I checked and turns out they're called "Sailor's Eyeballs" (Valonia ventricosa) and each one is a single-celled organism, one of the largest on earth. Yup, that's one cell: the "plastic" shell is its cell wall, and everything inside is made of nuclei and cell sap.
I never knew cells could get that big, I always assumed - wrongly, it turns out - that all cells were microscopic. You learn everyday!

Below is a short thread on some of the key takeaways.

I would love to see similar kind of investigative journalism in Ireland on the Bord na Móna energy parks currently being developed with AWS in the midlands.
These parks promise to deliver jobs and renewable energy to power AI growth but it is empty boosterism.
Published a day after Darragh O'Brien, Minister for energy, wrote an op-ed in the Business Post eulogising the data centre industry for 'delivering Ireland's renewable energy future'.
Hitching our energy future to the tech industry spells disaster.

Makes a mockery of our democracy that the Taoiseach is considering a referendum on the number of Ministers but has ruled out a referendum on neutrality - because he knows they would likely lose.
The Taoiseach has raised the possibility of a referendum to increase the number of government ministers.
Would you vote for or against increasing the number of cabinet ministers? jrnl.ie/7060970

Irish water do not monitor all sewage discharge overflows contrary to the urban wastewater treatment directive. I have a JR in court over it. Please sign petition asking Uisce Eireann to put live monitoring systems in place similar to UK. #DirtyBusiness

🌊The combination of Spring tide and low atmospheric pressure made local sea level abnormally high here. How?
Pressure was 980 hPa around this time. Local sea level rises 1 cm for every 1-hPa drop in pressure, so it was already around 33 cm (13") higher than standard pressure (1013 hPa) even before the significant effect of high tide and onshore easterly wind.
Previous more notable events occurred in Jan 1839, Feb 1903 (The Ulysses Storm), Dec 1954 (The Great North Strand Flood) and Feb 2002. meteocentre.com/analysis/map…

It seems Ireland is to be spit roasted as the beast from the east tag teams up with the pest from the West in some kind of sick weather gang bang.
