The Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor, has accused former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi of failing to pay the required N50 million permit fee for campaign billboards in the state. Mefor said Obi was making it appear as if the Anambra State Government was preventing him from mounting campaign billboards, whereas, according to him, the issue was the failure to pay the required fees. The commissioner said Obi was using the matter to attract public attention instead of paying the required amount. He insisted that the state government had not stopped anyone from putting up campaign billboards, provided the necessary fees were paid. Mefor also disclosed that he had directed the Managing Director of the Anambra State Signage and Advertising Agency to remove any billboard that had not been paid for. He said that, to the best of his knowledge, Obi had not paid the N50 million fee and was unwilling to do so. According to the commissioner, the responsibility for paying the billboard permit fee lies with the individual seeking to mount the billboard, not the political party. He maintained that the government expects everyone to follow the same rules, regardless of their political position or party affiliation. Mefor further argued that Anambra State charges less for billboard permits than some neighbouring states. He claimed that the fee in Anambra is N50 million, compared with N150 million in Enugu State and N250 million in Abia State.
