The latest on Proto Runes from the L1F space today:
1. You have to burn your Runes to mint Proto Runes. This is a one-way burn. You can never get your Runes back. This is similar to a space chain right now.
2. But in the future, using some kind of Layer 0 protocol, you could lock up your Runes and mint Proto Runes. Then prove Proto Runes burn to get your Runes back. This adds some additional trust assumptions (Layer 0 protocol).
3. In the future, using new burn and mint functionality that would need to be built into the Runes protocol, you could do a burn/mint between Runes and Proto Runes directly.
4. Smart contract backend is WASM. This means you don't get the network effects of Solidity/EVM, but you do get the flexibility of a newer emerging runtime (lots of languages are theoretically supported). Initially is Assembly Script.
5. Sandshrew team has built out some nice indexing tech to support all of these meta-protocols.
Bob's Take
This is an interesting innovation and potentially applies to any meta-protocol looking for additional programmability, but as a completely separate protocol (for now), I think the BRC-20 2.0 upgrade is the nicer way to go (direct in-place upgrade to the protocol, no liquidity or user fragmentation).
Will be fun to take a look at the Proto Runes spec when it comes out in the next few months.

Easily 90% of the investment going into Bitcoin L2s would do be much better spent going into normal "centralized" Bitcoin startups.

Decentralized is best, but not everything can be or needs to be decentralized.
The lady who cuts my hair is awesome. Fully fucking centralized! I just flew on a, guess what, a plane, which took me across the god damn ocean, and it was fully fucking centralized! I'm about to go to the grocery store a take my pick from a bedazzling selection of delicious cheeses, and it's all going to be fully fucking centralized.
Market forces and competition are imperfect, but when they work, they force businesses to provide high quality, reasonably priced goods and services, or ultimately be replaced by businesses that do.
And even imperfect market forces are a thousand times better than projects that are decentralized in name alone, or simply don't work and never ship.

Here's what's interesting about Rune Punks.
Ordinals is a numbering system for Bitcoin and Inscriptions. The market values numbers, as we see in sub 10k inscriptions and Bitcoin Punks.
Runes is a new (protocol level) numbering system for Runes and Inscriptions. Runes provides a new numbering system for Inscriptions! 👈
Rune Punks are 10k inscriptions that all have rune numbers. Right now, there are less than 25k inscriptions with rune numbers, so this is the most significant thing of Rune Punks.
When you are evaluating a Rune Punk, make sure to check its rune number. You can do that on the Ordinals website.
Inscriptions with low rune numbers may be valued by collectors in the future.
Also note that I'm just talking about the Rune Punk inscriptions. The actual fungible runes trade separately and will have their own market.
