Emperor Haile Selassie I reads the Charter of the Organization of African Unity during the heads of states meeting, May 25, 1963
The heads of 30 African states met at Africa Hall in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 22 to 25 May, to discuss methods of achieving political and economic co-operation. The heads of states unanimously voted to establish an "Organization for African Unity" which would work towards the realization of African unity. Preparing the groundwork for the meeting, was the conference of African Foreign Ministers who met in Addis from 15 to 21 May. Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia reading the Charter of the Organization of African Unity during the Heads of States Meeting." Note: The Organization of African Unity's (OAU) aims were to encourage political and economic integration among its member states for the betterment of the people of Africa, defend the sovereignty and independence of the member states, and remove all traces of colonialism and neo-colonialism from the continent. While the OAU had other goals for the countries within the group, the organization was never able to enforce decisions. As the OAU had a non-interference policy and no military, no country could ever be made to enact decisions, ultimately making the group more powerless than their founding countries had hoped for the organization. However, the OAU was very effective in aiding the eradication of colonialism and white minority rule.

Nine Christians were killed in Jordan and at least 60 more in Ethiopia over the past week. The two separate massacres in the Middle East and Africa underscore the dangers Christians worldwide face because of their faith.
In Jordan, gunmen opened fire on Christian mourners inside a church, killing nine people and wounding around 40 others.
In Ethiopia, attackers went from house to house, killing 60 Christians with guns and knives, destroying their homes.
The attacks come as Christians in the United States and around the world prepare to gather this Sunday for the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church, to pray for believers facing persecution because of their faith.
