Melat Kiros, who defeated Democratic Rep. Diana DeGette in Colorado's primary in July, was born in 1997, the same year DeGette began her decadeslong congressional career. On Tuesday night, the 29-year-old democratic socialist made history as the first Generation Z woman to be elected to Congress. Kiros joins Democratic Rep. Maxwell Frost of Florida, who in 2022 was the first member of the generation born between 1997 and 2012 to win a congressional seat. Read more: cbsn.ws/4iXSJ2g

This is the speech that won us 63% of the vote at Denver county assembly, beating DeGette for the first time in 30 years. A better world is within our reach, so let’s honor the organizers and dreamers that came before us and build it together.

The United States is deeply concerned about recent reports of targeted killings of civilians in Arsi zone, Oromia region, Ethiopia. The United States condemns religious, ethnic, or political motivated violence. Such horrific attacks against any group must stop. As we seek to understand this tragedy, the United States urges against characterizations that could deepen division. The United States calls on the government of Ethiopia to investigate and to bring the perpetrators to justice.

Emperor Haile Selassie I reads the Charter of the Organization of African Unity during the heads of states meeting, May 25, 1963 The heads of 30 African states met at Africa Hall in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 22 to 25 May, to discuss methods of achieving political and economic co-operation. The heads of states unanimously voted to establish an "Organization for African Unity" which would work towards the realization of African unity. Preparing the groundwork for the meeting, was the conference of African Foreign Ministers who met in Addis from 15 to 21 May. Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia reading the Charter of the Organization of African Unity during the Heads of States Meeting." Note: The Organization of African Unity's (OAU) aims were to encourage political and economic integration among its member states for the betterment of the people of Africa, defend the sovereignty and independence of the member states, and remove all traces of colonialism and neo-colonialism from the continent. While the OAU had other goals for the countries within the group, the organization was never able to enforce decisions. As the OAU had a non-interference policy and no military, no country could ever be made to enact decisions, ultimately making the group more powerless than their founding countries had hoped for the organization. However, the OAU was very effective in aiding the eradication of colonialism and white minority rule. #Ethiopia #ታሪካችን #AddisAbaba

Nine Christians were killed in Jordan and at least 60 more in Ethiopia over the past week. The two separate massacres in the Middle East and Africa underscore the dangers Christians worldwide face because of their faith. In Jordan, gunmen opened fire on Christian mourners inside a church, killing nine people and wounding around 40 others. In Ethiopia, attackers went from house to house, killing 60 Christians with guns and knives, destroying their homes. The attacks come as Christians in the United States and around the world prepare to gather this Sunday for the International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church, to pray for believers facing persecution because of their faith. 46 Orthodox Christians were killed in Ethiopia on October 24th in Shirka district. Children were among the dead. This was not an isolated attack. More than 400 Christians have been killed in this region in four years. Pray for Ethiopia. 🙏

60 Orthodox Christians massacred in Ethiopia. A report buried on a website is not enough. Where is the sustained outrage and interest from the legacy media? Why is Christian persecution so easy to look away from?

A picture worth 1,000 words. ❤️ After two wonderful months in Riyadh, we had to leave rather suddenly, without my husband. It was a long, exhausting journey from Bahrain to Addis Ababa and finally home to Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. On our Ethiopian Airlines flight, we all fell fast asleep. When I woke up, my four-year-old daughter was missing from her seat. I found her a few rows ahead, fast asleep in the arms of a lovely flight attendant named Lydia. She had woken up crying and confused, and Lydia, not wanting to disturb me, had picked her up, comforted her and rocked her back to sleep. My little girl stayed there for the next three hours. In the middle of a difficult journey, this beautiful act of kindness meant the world. Thank you, Ethiopian Airlines, and especially Lydia, for reminding us that kindness and humanity know no borders. ❤️
