On one hand, Pope Leo is a US citizen living abroad.
On the other hand, he is the head of state of another country.
I personally had assumed Leo would never vote again for the second reason. But that was the wrong assumption! The Vatican framing it as modeling civic duty.
Pope Leo XIV has voted in the midterm elections of the United States, expressing his “belief in the right and the duty of citizens to participate in democratic processes.”
The Holy See Press Office announced on Friday that Pope Leo XIV, an American citizen, "has exercised his right to vote as a United States citizen, whenever he was eligible to do so."
The Press Office confirmed that, “in keeping with this long-standing practice of civic participation, he has submitted his mail-in ballot in Chicago.”
“The Holy Father has also confirmed that, during his years of residence in Peru he exercised his right to vote whenever he was eligible to do so,” noted the statement.

This happened because a coalition of organizations rushed to fill the news gaps in South Florida; keeping @tessriski in Miami was the first order of business. You can read more on that here, as well as the new addition of the one and only @MarbinMiller!

Somewhere in Chicagoland, there’s an organizer whose job it is to call this “Bob Prevost” guy every single day and make sure he returns his ballot…
He may be the leader of the Catholic church, but Chicago-born Pope Leo XIV is still a registered voter in Illinois and requested a mail ballot for the midterm elections.

I did not do the Jeffrey Epstein investigation alone. I had the support of @MiamiHerald —it’s then executive editor, Mindy Marques; and these two incredible journalists, investigations editor Casey Frank and visual journalist Emily Michot. Thank you to all the courageous victims who shared their stories with me, and to those on the Pulitzer Board who made this honor of a lifetime happen. #pulitzerprizes

Congratulations to Carol @MarbinMiller on landing at @TheFloridaTrib as editor-at-large. "I’ll be joining a growing young staff of very talented journalists trying to create something special within a struggling industry," she announced today.
She adds: "It’s a player-coach gig, and my plan is to continue to report stories about Floridians at the margins – children, elders, people with disabilities – who suffer for lack of care or services."

Seek alternative routes when possible and be mindful that moderate to major coastal flooding is forecast to continue during periods of high tide this week.

South Florida is in the middle of the highest king tides ever recorded here. This morning reached the same major flood stage as Hurricane Wilma in 2005 sending water down streets from Miami to Fort Lauderdale and even flowed into some homes and businesses that weren't sandbagged.
