Milky Way with a Moonlit Earth. Compare this to my previous Milky Way view and behold the power of our Moon! The Earth is so awash in Moonglow it looks like daytime, complete with blue oceans and continental outlines. The Moon just keeps on giving - even more motivation to return there with the @NASAArtemis program!

20 years ago today, the U.S. Navy retired the Grumman F-14 Tomcat. You can see an F-14D(R) on display at our Udvar-Hazy Center: s.si.edu/3LxYKSd

Southern Hemisphere Milky Way galaxy view from the @Space_Station cupola. This 3s exposure series captured two of my favorite cupola views, the particularly dense Milky Way galaxy as seen from the Southern Hemisphere, and the bright, colorful lights of squid fishing boats (here, the bright blue and green lights off the coast of China, Thailand and India). Look at what the light did now!

Big news has broken out of the Tailhook Association’s convention in Reno, Nevada this weekend. The Navy has disclosed the existence of an all-new very long-range air-to-air missile, the AIM-424 “Malice.” An image released by the Navy taken last April shows a Super Hornet from Navy Air Test And Evaluation Squadron 23 (VX-23) loaded with four of the weapons. Another image shows the missile installed in an F-35C’s weapons bay. We will be doing additional analysis reporting on this weapon soon. Read more here: twz.com/air/aim-424-malice-v…

It's late August, do you know where your F/A-XX award is? I asked CNO Adm. Caudle that this morning---the Navy still sees an award possible this month, but is waiting on the decision from higher up. aviationweek.com/defense/air…

Thunderbolts in formation – an “only at Oshkosh” moment that almost didn’t happen! Three years of collaboration brought together a 1944 P-47D Thunderbolt and a 1978 A-10 Thunderbolt II, connecting more than 80 years of aviation history above #OSH25. Read the story behind this historic formation in the August 2026 issue of Sport Aviation, available today. I generally avoid dramatic takes. But I’ve found myself wondering over the past 24 hrs whether we’ll look back on these announcements as the point the Royal Navy really ceased to be a credible navy. I say that with the deepest respect for the RN. What has been announced is still largely theoretical. They hope to have it operational in around 10 yrs, based on platforms, designs & capabilities that don’t yet exist. While Russia continues to press, harass & the prospect of conflict sits on the horizon. To me, this looks less like making the hard spending decisions and more like managing the Royal Navy’s decline. I genuinely hope I’m wrong.
The DIP says the Type 45 destroyers will retire in 2035. The CCV / Type 9x LUSV / Future Air Dominance construct will have to be proven and operational in less than 10 years.
