How do corrective taxes work when firms can reformulate products to avoid them?
My #JMP studies the UK’s Soft Drinks Industry Levy: a tax with a multi-tier structure in which more sugary products face higher tax rates. #econtwitter

Incredibly happy to see my job market paper "The unequal economic consequences of carbon pricing" out in this month's issue of the 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗘𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄.
I find that carbon pricing reduces emissions and spurs green innovation, but disproportionately burdens poorer households - not only through higher energy bills, but also through larger income losses.
Here is an earlier thread of the paper: nitter.cf/drkaenzig/status/14592…

Whenever you are down or feel bad about the world, just remember that people build stuff like these. And it all started with a stone, ending up with a masterpiece like this.
This Art Deco sculpture by Felisberto Ranzini depicts the Roman god Mercury wearing a winged helmet on the facade of the Old Stock Exchange building in São Paulo, Brazil.
This goes on to show that there's so much you can appreciate about beauty and human ambition.

Oh no! Nordhaus is a legend of environmental economics but taking innovation seriously. His PhD thesis was a very early micro model of technological change. Because of this, even in the 70s, he was anti Club of Rome ("Resources as a Constraint on Growth"). 1/2

Malas noticias.
Rumors I’ve been hearing. I’ll start with OpenAI, then Anthropic.
OpenAI: The internal model’s reasoning jump comes from more aggressive RL, including training in games and simulated environments. Strategies learned there transfer to research mathematics and other fields. Navier–Stokes and ETH show the scale of the improvement. The clue is in the Synthetic RL hiring: self-play, simulators, and synthetic feedback.
Anthropic: Same direction with its internal Claude model. It’s trained on long, difficult tasks in demanding environments, and the reasoning skills transfer to other fields. Its ETH result shows how far the improvement has gone. The earlier Universes listing and the RL hiring around mathematical reasoning align with that.
Musk’s Digital Optimus hiring explicitly calls for measuring transfer from games into general computer use. That’s why his game-playing AI push matters: games develop abilities that work far beyond the games themselves.
The interesting part is where those abilities show up. Each lab’s internal model applies reasoning developed through interactive training to mathematical problems that had resisted decades of work.

"massive implications for search and rescue" riiight
Purdue University's IDEAS Lab built an autonomous drone that tracks runners through dense forests completely without GPS or cloud networks.
By running 3D LiDAR mapping and obstacle-avoidance AI entirely on-chip, it can weave under tree canopies and predict target movement through blind spots in real time.
Massive implications for next-gen search & rescue and edge AI.

"ANOTHER LULA WILL NOT BE BORN"
For two decades, Brazil’s president has showed the world’s progressives how to build and wield power. But his winning coalition is about to unravel, forcing harder lessons for the global left.
