⭐️ Book announcement: THE INFECTIOUS MIND ⭐️ I am thrilled to say that my latest book, The Infectious Mind, will be out in January with @HoZ_Books (Bloomsbury). It explores the social contagion of illness, from medieval dancing plagues, old stories of hysteria and the recovered-memory epidemic through to modern contagions of identity, pain and fatigue. I hope it’s as enjoyable to read as it’s been to write. It’s available to pre-order here: bloomsbury.com/uk/infectious…. Please do share with people you know who might be interested. Early endorsement snippets: ‘Fascinating yet disquieting’ – Richard Dawkins ‘An elegantly written, compelling exploration’ – @kathleen_stock1 ‘Gosling demonstrates a mastery of the literature… An important contribution in a field too often left to sensationalism’ – Robert Bartholomew ‘A rich and compelling analysis of socially transmitted illness… a gripping investigation’ – Elizabeth Loftus ‘Terrific… A fascinating topic that has never been more relevant’ – Allen Frances @LittleHardman

"It's important that legislation and law keep pace with evolving identities." – evidence from Stephen Kiely to the Joint Committee. A surprising proposition.

"I spoke to dozens of psychologists for this investigation, all of whom expressed fears about the professional consequences of speaking openly..." @bindelj in @unherd on the consequences of the #conversionbill
The Cass Review, of 2024, was supposed to be a turning point. Young people experiencing gender distress should not simply be waved through to the operating table, said Cass. Instead, they should receive comprehensive, evidence-based mental-health support. But what if that support comes from a profession that has given itself to trans ideology? In this thorough and damning investigation, @bindelj uncovers the rot at the heart of British clinical psychology: an affirmation approach that amounts to, as one whistleblower put it, a “trans conveyer belt”. Excellent session in Westminster yesterday with @matildagosling presenting @SexMattersOrg research on harm that the Conversion Practices Bill would do, and talking with MPs and peers. The bill will stop therapists feeling able to work with gender questioning children and young people, and there is no exception at all for parents. @sueevansprotect said "I think this bill will have a devastating effect on parents who have children who are expressing ideas about their gender."

Brighton Council has now amended its plans for the Withdean Pool to include single-sex changing cubicles (hopefully in separate areas, though unclear). Original mixed-sex design was unsafe for women and girls. Thank you for listening to residents’ feedback, @BrightonHoveCC.
This is Brighton Council's Equality Impact Assessment for the proposed Withdean Pool with its mixed-sex changing village (via FOI). ‘Does your analysis indicate a disproportionate impact relating to Gender Identity and Sex (including non-binary and intersex people)?’ ‘Possibly YES – positive’ 🧐 Women and girls don’t need to worry about their safety in mixed-sex facilities because of ‘cubicle design’ and ‘operational management’.

A clear statement from @RapeCrisisEandW - Every adult and child who has experienced sexual violence deserves access to to support - The Rape Crisis National Service Standards recognise the benefit of women only services and spaces - RCEW Centres MUST provide women-only spaces and services - This does not mean that they cannot *also* provide services (or referral) for male survivors including trans-identifying men. rapecrisis.org.uk/news/rcew-…

Two Tavistock whistleblowers warned about its gender clinic long before it closed. Now they are raising the alarm about the draft Conversion Practices Bill. Watch therapists Marcus and Susan Evans explain why it poses serious risks to children, parents and families.

🚨Hilary Cass has called for an independent inquiry into how Brighton GPs were allowed to prescribe cross-sex hormones to children as young as 12.“There urgently needs to be an investigation of why every system that should have protected children, young people, and indeed young adults has failed,” she told me. The employment tribunal between Dr Sarah Redvers and NHS Sussex has highlighted how regulators and the NHS collectively failed to stop prescribing of puberty blockers and hormones against national guidelines - for years - and how instead the person raising concerns was accused of transphobia and herself investigated. Dr Redvers sat down with me for her only newspaper interview about her treatment in a scandal which, Cass now says, “dwarfs” that of the Tavistock’s GIDS. Me for the Sunday Times… thetimes.com/article/cfde7b4…

A teenager was distressed about her gender, but also had a long history of mental health difficulties and anorexia. Her GP discussed the case with Dr Hall. Hall’s reaction was to go ahead with the prescription. “That was a recommendation for a patient he hadn’t met or assessed. Why would you do that as a clinician?” asked Redvers.
Dr Redvers was forced out of her job after formally raising clinical and safeguarding concerns about GP & trans campaigner Dr Sam Hall. Instead of senior health figures acting on the warnings, Redvers was victimised, accused of being transphobic and placed under investigation. thetimes.com/article/cfde7b4…

🚩 🚩 🚩 Brighton Council is prepared to put women and children in harm’s way in its pursuit of mixed-sex changing rooms at its leisure centre. Its risk assessment stating that a mixed-sex changing village will have a ‘positive benefit’ flies in the face of the actual evidence that sexual predators use mixed-sex changing rooms to target women and children in a state of undress. Our research of police data from all over the country shows that 86-88% of crimes in changing rooms in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and 100% in Scotland, took place in MIXED-SEX facilities. (Single-sex changing rooms accounted for 12-14% of changing rooms crimes in E, W and NI.) The council seems hell-bent on designing-in harm to its female residents and will require the leisure centre operator, Freedom Leisure, to provide extra staff training. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Here’s a thought: how about designing OUT the harm by providing single-sex changing rooms as standard, with separate family changing rooms for those who need it? Seems obvious to most ordinary people that deliberately designing a changing room that will attract sexual predators might (will) cause problems down the line… The safest changing room is a single-sex changing room.

2/ No Act of parliament recognises contested identity concepts in law. This draft bill does. It removes the freedom to question or not believe in such. It makes it a crime to say "I think you are a lesbian, not a trans man" to your distressed daughter.

Many congratulations to @ucl Prof Sallie Baxendale on being shortlisted for the Maddox Prize for standing up for science. 'Baxendale told THE that being shortlisted for the Maddox Prize “isn’t just a personal vindication” given the standing of the prize in the scientific community. “It sends a message that scientific scrutiny is something to be encouraged, rather than feared,” she said. “I sincerely hope this recognition gives others the confidence to speak up, challenge unsupported claims and insist that evidence remains at the heart of decision-making, particularly in the field of gender medicine, but in all areas of medicine, where assumptions and misplaced certainty can have very real consequences for people’s lives.”' timeshighereducation.com/new…
