Tata is being criminally destroyed, and no business leader dares say a word. How long will you stay silent? Until they own you? Indian business is not Modi and Shah's plaything. You lack courage. We don't. We will ensure justice for these crimes.

Satya Niketan Has Become the Hostel Delhi Never Built Delhi needs an online student housing registry, graded safety regulation, and one lakh new student beds in five years. The Satya Niketan incident is not just a story about a five-storey building collapse, the deaths of seven students, and injuries to several others. The screams of students buried under the debris are a haunting manifestation of a full-blown student-housing crisis in Delhi. The crisis did not begin last week. The incident merely made visible what Delhi has ignored for decades. Delhi has a vast network of colleges and academic institutions without adequate, safe residential infrastructure. For a few days, media hubbub will centre on shock and condolences, high-profile visits, suspended officials, FIRs, arrests, and promises to inspect PGs better. After every tragedy, the ritual of seeking accountability is played out with diligence. A few weeks later, we wait for the next tragedy. This is shameful. When Student Demand Meets Institutional Failure Delhi University alone has only 7,000 hostel beds for its 2.5 lakh regular students, more than half of whom come from outside Delhi. Only about 6% of these students get a university or college hostel bed. Accommodation can determine whether students, especially girls, can afford higher education or fully access college facilities. Student housing must be viewed as education infrastructure. The university may provide students with subsidised education and often outsources the responsibility for student housing to neighbourhoods outside its gates. Satya Niketan, a modest resettlement colony, has transformed itself into a residential wing of South Campus colleges. This institutional shortage has created this informal PG economy with weak oversight. It is often supported by a regulatory ecosystem vulnerable to corruption. In a distorted market like this, students lose almost all bargaining power. They are forced to accept high rents, additional electricity charges, crammed rooms, dingy pathways, and dirty bathrooms as the norm. Landlords Get the Premium, Students Carry the Risk For a student from an affluent Delhi family, admission is admission. For a student from a middle-class or lower-income family in Bihar, Rajasthan, UP, J&K, or the Northeast, it is admission plus rent, security deposit, brokerage, commuting, safety concerns, and uncertainty. The hostel shortage functions as an additional tuition fee. Landlords exploit the demand-supply gap. They charge a premium for proximity. They add floors, divide rooms, and squeeze in extra beds at will. But they rarely invest this additional income in improving safety or conducting independent structural audits. Students carry the risks every day. An 18-year-old arriving in Delhi can check the bed, bathroom, fan, and kitchen. But they rarely get the answers for structural safety, legality, and permitted occupancy. The problem extends far beyond Satya Niketan. Mukherjee Nagar, Kamla Nagar, Katwaria Sarai, Laxmi Nagar, and Jamia Nagar have variations of the same model. A high-density student-housing economy operates inside neighbourhoods never designed for such loads. In the early 2000s, I spent four undergraduate years in one such neighbourhood—Shakarpur in East Delhi. Two decades later, student housing remains remarkably similar: informal, unsafe, unhygienic, and overcrowded. The student housing market rewards density but does not price safety. One major earthquake could create thousands of Satya Niketan-type collapses in Delhi. One major fire in one of these dense neighbourhoods could turn into a catastrophe. That day is unimaginable, but possible. Regulation Without Supply Will Not Work Structural audits, safety certificates, and inspections of PG hostels are not emergency responses. These are part of the basic safety framework for any kind of housing and should be conducted periodically. Do we really need the High Court to direct the Municipal Corporation to perform its basic function of examining permissions and violations of building bye-laws? Do we even have an adequate legal framework to regulate student housing? Satya Niketan has raised many such questions. Knee-jerk reactions such as sudden crackdowns or the closure of existing PGs in one neighbourhood are not solutions. Where will those students go? If we squeeze a balloon at one end, we can expect the pressure to move elsewhere. Similarly, regulation without creating additional supply can worsen the situation. The Way Forward: Map It, Make It Safe, Fix the Shortage I would not make the mistake of framing the Satya Niketan catastrophe simply as individual misconduct. Satya Niketan exposes institutional failures on three fronts—an information failure, a regulatory failure, and, above all, a supply failure. Delhi therefore needs three corresponding solutions—map the market, make existing housing safe, and build the missing hostel beds. First, map the market by creating an Online Student Housing Registry covering every student-housing facility. All basic information, including structural certification, fire and electrical safety compliance, permitted occupancy, rent, electricity charges, and other fees, must be made available in one place. A student looking for accommodation should be able to enter an address on a website or an app and find out its safety and certification status. At the very least, the online registry will begin to correct the information gap students face today. Second, make it safe by introducing a Graded Regulation System. I would think of it as a simple green, yellow, orange, and red safety-labelling mechanism. Green-flagged properties should be certified for occupation and undergo periodic inspections. Yellow-flagged properties should have rectifiable deficiencies and should be given strict deadlines to meet the safety framework and undergo rigorous reinspection. Orange-flagged properties may be structurally weak but repairable. They should be vacated in a planned manner and repaired before being allowed to reopen. Red-flagged properties, with imminent structural or fire risks, should be closed immediately. If a building is beyond repair, it should be demolished. The purpose of regulation is to make student accommodation safer, not to launch an indiscriminate sealing drive. Delhi Needs a Student Housing Mission Lastly, the biggest challenge is fixing the shortage. Delhi needs a Student Housing Mission. We cannot solve a shortage of two lakh hostel beds by adding another 500-room hostel at a time. The solution has to match the scale of the problem. Delhi needs one lakh new hostel beds in the next five years, located on or well connected to campuses. At least one-third should be reserved for women. The mission would require an investment of roughly ₹20,000 crore. That is ₹4,000 crore annually, and it need not be funded entirely from the exchequer. Universities, DDA, MCD, the Delhi Government, and the Central Government can come together to form a Joint Action Group to raise resources and execute the mission. Universities can expand existing hostels. DDA and MCD can examine vacant buildings for conversion into student accommodation and pool additional land. The Delhi and Union governments can provide necessary capital. Regulated private developers can also be brought in. What is needed is one mission that connects all these pieces. Delhi has built a Metro network of more than 350 kilometres, is undertaking a ₹20,000-crore Central Vista redevelopment, and has spent nearly ₹100 crore repairing 70 ministerial bungalows. Surely Delhi can find the resources to build safe housing for students. The constraint is not Delhi’s capability to build. It is what Delhi chooses to build. Satya Niketan should change the debate. The scale of the solution must finally match the scale of the problem. Not another round of blame games, sealing drives, and forgotten promises. The question is no longer simply who violated which building bye-laws. There is a more uncomfortable question. How did Delhi build universities and colleges for lakhs of students but forget to build places for them to sleep? Satya Niketan has become the hostel Delhi never built. Delhi should now build them. One lakh safe, affordable student-housing beds in the next five years!!! vidyarthee.substack.com/p/sa…

NSUI after the Satya Niketan building collapse - • First to reach the site and help rescue students • Arranged first aid for injured students • Immediately released helpline numbers on social media • Connected with parents of students from across the country • Took care of injured students and helped get them to hospitals • Arranged food for students forced to vacate nearby PGs • Now arranging temporary accommodation for students who have been displaced And what is @ABVPVoice doing? Holding protests outside municipal offices and, shamefully, stopping the media from covering the accident site. When students are trapped under rubble, @nsui stands with students. ABVP stands in front of cameras and blocks the truth. Students need help, not political drama. Shame on ABVP.
