I cannot believe this, but I analyzed the data for literally two weeks before posting this chart, and yes, this is true
New customer acquisition on Meta is getting cheaper, contrary to popular opinion.
When looking at average nCAC across all 1,000+ ad accounts tracked by Northbeam, we can clearly see that costs dropped by as much as 33% in Q3 year over year.
This is tracking billions in ad spend, filtered for accounts that only appear in both quarters, for a fair comparison.
How is this possible?
A few hypotheses:
1. Public opinion (especially on this platform) is quick to blame Meta. Anecdotal evidence is NOT indicative of an actual trend - you must bring data. This is kind of our whole thing at @northbeam.
2. Meta has made significant algorithmic changes this year, as we've seen in past charts shared on this channel. It seems like these changes are working. Or at least, people are adapting.
3. I do not expect this drop to continue forever. Although we have eschewed all seasonal trends here, CACs will increase during BFCM and stay elevated through Christmas.
4. Targeting new customers has gotten easier. Northbeam Apex and Meta's incremental attribution have improved new customer acquisition performance across our advertisers.
5. So it's not just prices - it's HOW we are targeting new customers. Because we're better at targeting, it's getting cheaper over time.
6. These attribution models only improve with time. Therefore, the downward trend seen below.
7. The huge spike is Amazon Prime Day + Father's Day + 4th of July, which were awkwardly placed near each other this year.
8. Meta remains undefeated. We had some growing pains there, but this chart clearly shows that on average, new customer acquisition is improving, at least across Northbeam advertisers.
9. Everyone is listening to people like @9operators when they hammer new customer acquisition as a key priority for your business, and therefore folks are getting better at it.
10. Something happened this summer. Some kind of cultural vibe shift mixed with macro changes. Folks are just... happier? And happier people buy more stuff. You probably feel it too.
11. Macroeconomic challenges around gas prices, shipping disruptions, and exchange rates have culled a generation of DTC businesses, which has decreased competition somewhat. Lots of businesses folding this year.
12. Meta is actually listening to us and building a platform that permits us to efficiently and cheaply target new customer acquisition. Granted, they are still pushing AI that will make many of the people reading this message redundant.
13. The loudest folks online are the ones having problems with Meta Ads. I know many killers on here who don't ever speak to their own performance and are doing great right now. As a wise man once said:
"The realest ecomm operators move in silence like the 'g' in lasagna."

This week in data from @northbeam: recovering from Prime Big Deal Days.
Engagement metrics show red as they recover to normal.
Amazon pulled forward at least $2 billion of revenue during Big Deal Days, making an early peak of performance long before the Cyber Five weekend.
This is still early for the Cyber Five rush. I think next week's performance will improve.
The real battle is conversion lag. You may need to recalculate your multipliers now that Big Deal Days are over.
Even if you didn't advertise on Amazon (or you aren't listed there) you are affected by the demand generated from Amazon's promo-shifting.

Northbeam's data across thousands of Meta advertisers: CPMs are up 25% on this time last year, and the Black Friday spike that started in November last year started in September this time.
That matches what I'm seeing on my own accounts. What I'd change if you're spending on Meta into Q4:
1. Re-run your break-even now, not in November. If first-order profit was $20 at last year's CPMs, it's gone at these. Know the number before the spend goes up.
2. Move money from cold prospecting to creator Partnership ads. Same product, creator's name on the ad, and on our accounts they come in cheaper per thousand and convert better. Meta is rewarding them this year.
3. Pull the evergreen offer forward. If the promo spike has moved to September, the brands waiting until Black Friday to put an offer out are paying November prices for October traffic.
4. Don't chase it with budget. Rising CPMs at flat conversion means every extra dollar buys less. Hold spend, fix the creative mix, then scale what's still working.
I'm less sure the cause is the attribution change Northbeam points at. It might just be more brands pushing earlier. Either way the CPM is already climbing.

Amazon's Big Deal Days are cannibalizing Black Friday.
Nearly $2 billion dollars of revenue were generated during Big Deal Days, and some portion of that was likely demand captured early when it would have landed originally on Black Friday.
This event sustained excellent new customer acquisition performance across platforms last week.
At @northbeam we track billions in ad spend a year across thousands of ad accounts.
The coming weeks are a golden time of year: brands are laying the groundwork for excellent BFCM acquisition with awareness campaigns, new channel testing, and locking in offers.
In about two weeks, we're going to see everything break loose. CPMs will skyrocket, conversion lags will increase, and ROAS will drop right up to the big day.

~$1B in midterm money is flooding the ad platforms.
Right before BFCM.
@BryanBumgardner from @Northbeam says it’s the most chaotic run-up he’s seen since the last election:
“You need to have your performance benchmarks set and just focus on your own stuff.”
His checklist:
→ Flighting
→ Conversion lag
→ Benchmarks
“You can’t time it, so don’t try.”
What are you seeing in your accounts this week?
Conversion performance is improving on Meta, TikTok and AppLovin.
As "Prime Deal Days" approached, CVR and ROAS jumped week over week.
Hard to say if this is early BFCM sales, mini-Prime Day growth, or what.
Or maybe Venus is in retrograde and people are changing things up and need new stuff (according to my wife.)
Either way, this is a "shoulder season" of performance before BFCM. A lot of smart operators are riding a nice little wave of efficiency right now.
I don't expect the true BFCM chaos to begin until the first week of November.
The spikes in spending have always started in that week, in the four years I've been tracking this data.
Of course, this year we have a mid-term election and a billion dollars of political ad spend clouding the field.
Remember: just like the stock market, you cannot time ad auctions.
Set your profitability benchmarks, set your conversion lag multipliers, and be sure you know what your metric targets are.
That will tell you if you need to scale or cut back budget, no matter what happens over the next three months.

1. Set your performance benchmarks.
2. Build a cash war chest.
3. Watch CPMs after Election Day.
