कहते हैं जहाँ राम नाम होता है, वहाँ हनुमान आज भी आते हैं। चुपचाप, सबसे पीछे बैठते हैं, आँसू पोंछते हैं, और चले जाते हैं।
मैंने इसे कहानी समझा था, जब तक मैंने खुद नहीं देखा।
हमारे घर में हर मंगलवार सुंदरकांड होता है। दादी की परंपरा। 1982 से। लखनऊ, चौक वाली गली। छोटा आँगन, दरी बिछती, ढोलक, मंजीरा। 15-20 लोग।
दादी कहती थीं, "जगह खाली रखना, एक।" हम पूछते, "किसके लिए?" कहतीं, "उनके लिए जो बिना बुलाए आते हैं।"
मैं हँसता। 2023 में दादी गईं। 89 साल। आखिरी मंगलवार को भी उन्होंने मंजीरा बजाया था। मरने से पहले बोलीं, "सुंदरकांड मत रोकना। वो आते हैं।"
हमने जारी रखा। पापा, माँ, मैं।
पिछले साल जुलाई। बारिश। लोग कम आए। सिर्फ नौ लोग। मैंने दरी के आखिर में वही जगह खाली छोड़ी, दादी वाली।
पाठ शुरू हुआ। "अतुलित बल धामं..."
तभी दरवाजे पर एक बूढ़ा आया। भीगा हुआ। करीब 70-75 साल। गठीला बदन, घुटनों तक धोती, ऊपर अंगोछा। दाढ़ी सफेद, आँखें लाल, जैसे रोया हो। हाथ में कुछ नहीं।
माँ ने कहा, "बाबा, अंदर आ जाओ।"
वो कुछ नहीं बोला। जूते बाहर उतारे, सबसे पीछे, वही खाली जगह पर बैठ गया। सिर झुका लिया।
हमने पाठ किया। जब "जामवंत के वचन सुहाए" आया, तो उसकी आँखों से पानी बहने लगा। चुपचाप। उसने पोंछा नहीं।
मैंने देखा, उसके हाथ बड़े थे, नसें उभरी, नाखून टूटे, जैसे पहाड़ उठाए हों।
आरती हुई। सबको प्रसाद मिला। मैंने उसे भी दिया, दो लड्डू। उसने एक लिया, दूसरा वापस कर दिया। धीरे से बोला, "एक ही बहुत है।"
मैंने पूछा, "बाबा, कहाँ से आए?"
मुस्कुराया, "राम जी जहाँ बुला लें।"
"नाम?"
बोला, "दास।"
वो उठा, जाने लगा। मैंने कहा, "बारिश है, रुक जाओ।"
बोला, "जिनका नाम लिया, वही छत हैं।"
चला गया।
अगले मंगलवार फिर आया। इस बार पहले से। वही जगह। इस बार भी भीगा नहीं था, पर आँखें वही लाल।
पाठ में जब "तुम्हरो मंत्र विभीषण माना" आया, तो वो हल्के से कांपने लगा। जैसे किसी ने छाती पर हाथ रख दिया हो।
पापा ने बाद में कहा, "ये बाबा हर बार रोता क्यों है?"
मैंने ध्यान दिया। वो कभी ताली नहीं बजाता, कभी गाता नहीं। बस सुनता। और जब "राम" नाम आता, तो उसकी साँस तेज हो जाती।
तीसरे मंगलवार, मैं जल्दी आया। सोचा बात करूँगा। वो पहले से बैठा था। मैंने पूछा, "बाबा, आप हनुमान जी के भक्त लगते हो।"
उसने मेरी तरफ देखा। आँखों में ऐसा तेज था कि मैं झुक गया। बोला, "भक्त नहीं, सेवक। भक्त माँगता है, सेवक सुनता है।"
मैंने पूछा, "क्या माँगते हो?"
हँसा, "वही जो 5000 साल से माँग रहा हूँ, उनका नाम और सुनने को मिल जाए।"
मुझे लगा पागल है।
उस रात दादी की पुरानी डायरी मिली। 1998 की। लिखा था, "आज सुंदरकांड में एक बूढ़ा आया। पीछे बैठा। बहुत रोया। मैंने प्रसाद दिया तो बोला, माता, तुम्हारा कंठ मीठा है। जैसे माता सीता गाती थीं। मैंने पूछा कौन हो, बोला, राम कथा का पहरेदार। उसके पैर देखे, धूल नहीं लगी थी, बारिश में भी।"
मेरा दिल धड़का।
चौथे मंगलवार, मैंने तय किया। मैं उसके पैर देखूँगा।
पाठ शुरू हुआ। बिजली चली गई। मोमबत्ती जली। उसी रोशनी में मैंने देखा। वो बैठा था, पर उसकी परछाई दीवार पर बड़ी लग रही थी। जैसे कोई बैठा नहीं, खड़ा हो। पूँछ जैसी कोई आकृति नहीं, पर कंधे चौड़े, झुके हुए, जैसे भार उठाया हो।
आरती के बाद सब गए। वो रुका। मेरे पास आया। मेरे सिर पर हाथ रखा। हाथ भारी, गरम। बोला, "तुम्हारी दादी ने जगह खाली रखी, तुमने भी रखी। इसलिए आया।"
मैंने पूछा, "आप कौन हो, सच बताओ।"
वो दरवाजे तक गया। मुड़ा। बोला, "जहाँ राम कथा अधूरी छूटे, वहाँ मैं पूरी सुनने आता हूँ। जहाँ कोई प्रेम से रोए, वहाँ मैं आँसू पोंछने आता हूँ। नाम मत पूछो। नाम लोगे तो मैं चला जाऊँगा।"
और निकल गया। बारिश फिर तेज थी। मैंने बाहर देखा, गली में कोई नहीं। पैर के निशान नहीं।
अगले मंगलवार वो नहीं आया। उसके बाद भी नहीं।
मैं उदास हुआ। माँ बोली, "शायद कहीं और चले गए।"
दीपावली पर हमने बड़ा सुंदरकांड रखा। 50 लोग। पंडित जी आए। पाठ शुरू हुआ। भीड़। जगह नहीं।
तभी दरवाजे पर वही बूढ़ा। इस बार साफ धोती, अंगोछा नहीं, ऊपर लाल चोला। भीगा नहीं। मुस्कुरा रहा था।
मैंने दौड़ कर जगह बनाई, वही पीछे वाली। वो बैठा।
पाठ में जब "सियावर रामचंद्र की जय" हुआ, तो सब खड़े हुए। वो भी खड़ा हुआ। उस पल लाइट आई। ट्यूबलाइट में मैंने साफ देखा, उसकी आँखें बंद, गालों पर आँसू, और होंठों पर हल्की मुस्कान, जैसे बरसों बाद घर लौटा हो।
आरती के बाद मैंने पैर छूने की कोशिश की। उसने रोक दिया। मेरे कान में फुसफुसाया, "पैर मत छुओ। कथा सुनो। मैं कथा में रहता हूँ, पैर में नहीं।"
और चला गया।
उस रात मैंने दादी की फोटो के सामने दिया जलाया। समझ आया।
