UKHSA’s line is that the risk is low and there’s no evidence it spread inside either school. Which is reassuring, right up until you remember hepatitis A is a disease you catch from someone else’s faeces. NHS advice is blunt: it is not common in the UK. It is common in parts of Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Central and South America. You get it from contaminated food, water, or hands that were not washed. Letters have gone home. The schools are still open. The official cure is more handwashing. That is the bit nobody wants to finish. UKHSA’s own reports say infections have been climbing since 2022–23, and the agency names the drivers: social mixing back, international travel back, migration back. Typhoid hit a record. Malaria stayed high. Measles and whooping cough came roaring back as child vaccine uptake slid. Travel-linked hepatitis A already clusters in children. So when a liver virus that Britain spent decades making rare shows up in primary schools, the interesting question is not the hygiene poster. It is why diseases we used to import on holiday are now turning up in the classroom, and why the people paid to notice keep stopping the sentence one clause early.
