Imagine publishing someone's Ghana Card with only the ID number and date of birth covered.
Other visible details may still identify the person or expose information unnecessarily.
Redacting some details is not the same as minimising the data disclosed.

Children’s #personaldata is used by various entities and individuals to make decisions that affect them. While some uses may be well-intentioned and lawful, some practices negatively affect children.
This is worsened by the proliferation of the internet, social media platforms, new technologies such as artificial intelligence, and devices that enable people to collect and use or share children’s personal data at unprecedented levels. This leaves children at high risk of misuse of their personal data. Children are also exposed to these new technologies, devices, and platforms, where they reveal their personal data while using them.
Unfortunately, children do not yet have the capacity to understand the risks and consequences of sharing their data on these platforms, even when they consent. They therefore need special protection and consideration, which the Data Protection and Privacy Act and its Regulations provide to regulate the collection and use of their data.
Over the next 30 days, together with Tecnolegal Advisory Centre Ug (@TechnolegalUg ), we will raise awareness of the law, practice, and considerations that stakeholders need to take into account when collecting or processing children’s personal data, as well as the consequences of sharing children’s data.

#Article | A Commentary on the decision of the Personal Data Protection Office, Uganda (@pdpoUG) in Muzira Patrick v National Identification and Registration Authority (@NIRA_Ug).
🟠Can you use your data access rights to obtain someone else's #personaldata?
On 28th May 2026, Uganda's #dataprotection regulator answered with a firm no, delivering its first-ever decision against a government entity. The PDPO held that NIRA acted lawfully in declining to release National Identification Register records relating to ten third-party #datasubjects to a private complainant, in the absence of their consent, a court order, or another recognised legal basis.
In this commentary, we examine the decision and its reasoning, what it means for data subjects, public bodies, and data controllers going forward, and offer a critical look at aspects of the reasoning that, in our view, warrant closer scrutiny.

Our #PersonalData is everywhere! How do we protect our business?
At the #NationalSymposiumonConsumerProtectionandCompetitionRegulation #26March2026, a story was told of a lady who was tracked and scammed by fraudsters who got her personal details from a hotel where she stayed in Entebbe: Phone number, email, physical address, national ID copy, bank details, car number plate, and sometimes even CCTV footage.
We leave these details everywhere! When we pay for government services, buy products/services online, register to access all manner of spaces, or just drive into secured parking…etc. Yet most of these do not understand the responsibility of collecting/storing/sharing other people's data. This is how it ends up in the hands of scammers & fraudsters…
While security needs to keep track of who comes & goes may be valid, not everyone with a building or office should be collecting personal data! Many should not even be certified by the @pdpoUG for this purpose!
