This piece covers all the reasons I supported @charlesallen’s AV bill with a resolution in ANC1A.
This is the most important piece about DC AV policy to date; a must-read if you care about AVs or want to learn more about @charlesallen's best-in-the-nation AV bill. This bill creates dedicated funding for workers' compensation and transit infrastructure investment while requiring an additional year of rigorous testing before operations start in 2028. If we're serious about saving lives and modernizing DC's contracting economy, passing this bill is a no-brainer.

On the election results and tech: 1. As a Democrat, I’m thrilled that we won big with a Big Tent of voters (including Trump voters) and candidates -- from @AOC to @MGPforCongress. 2. This was a wave referendum election on Trump's record and economy, not an “AI election” or “data center” election. Some Mandate Piggybackers want to claim otherwise, but Dems did well everywhere -- not just where AI or data centers were an issue. 3. AI was barely a topic in ads, data centers appeared in only 5% of ads, and voters ranked both issues well below costs. Still, the exit polls and referendum results show that those of us who care about our innovative future have our work cut out for us. Temporary data center bans just kick the can on the hard work of crafting policies to make sure they are built right and benefit communities. 4. Now it’s on us. With Democrats taking the House, Senate, and governorships, we have to show we can make technology work for all Americans. That means neither a return to tech’s Obama-era honeymoon nor a continuation of the Biden-era divorce, but a new chapter.

Today in Capital Commonsense—@charlesallen is holding a markup on the bill to allow Waymo 11/9. He has secured big concessions and by creating competition with Uber/Lyft there’s evidence that they pay their drivers MORE in cities with Waymo. More from @AVGregR. open.substack.com/pub/capita…

Democrats should really consider getting on board with self-driving cars, I don't think the alliance with the Teamsters is paying large dividends.
Teamsters General President Sean O’Brien here. Just voted in the State of Florida for the first time, and very proud to have cast a ballot for @SenAshleyMoody. Sen. Moody has been extremely helpful working with the Teamsters to protect workers’ pensions, defend good-paying jobs, and support well-funded union apprenticeship programs. The Teamsters look forward to working with Sen. Moody in her role on the Senate HELP Committee to pass the Faster Labor Contracts Act and get this critical legislation signed into law to protect American workers.

A group of us have been working to bring together people who want a little more common sense from DC government. We’re still kicking around names, but we know what we want to do: help shape our city’s future, support commonsense candidates, and push for a government that gets the basics right. We’re getting together over drinks on Tuesday, November 17 at 6 PM at The Golden Age. Come meet the group and help shape what comes next! RSVP: partiful.com/e/20d4amn4k6LGF…
Even if you disagree with our opinions, the reality is that DC has a political vacuum for those of us who don’t identify with either extreme. I’ve seen you suggest that people who hold different views from you and the far left faction in DC somehow aren’t Democrats. Many of us have spent years serving Democratic administrations, staffing campaigns, contributing to the party and fighting for its values. We love this party and want it to do better, for the people it’s supposed to serve. Unfortunately, the city’s far-left movement has alienated people like me. Not because we don’t care about equity or progressive values, but because too often, ideological purity takes precedence over thoughtful debate, practical solutions and whether government actually delivers for people. I’m determined to help build a home for a commonsense faction in DC. One that welcomes disagreement, values good ideas regardless of where they come from and puts our city’s future first. And I mean it when I say this: you’re welcome in that big tent, too.

DC ATEs only fine if you are >11 mph over speed limit. In a residential area, that means going 36 in a 25. Getting hit by a car going 36 mph has ~2x the force and ~3x the likelihood of death. My wife and I have never received a moving violation - it really isn’t that hard!
Rarely disagree w MY on safety issues but DC machine-guns people with $100 tickets for minor violations that put nobody in danger. It’s ridiculous and a lot of people just ignore the tickets.

New PF Global poll shows plurality support for AVs in the DC area. The same poll finds that once people try AVs, their approval goes up 30 - 40 percentage points. DC residents should have more transit options. pf.global/state-of-avs-globa…

It isn't notable that a skeptical public would respond to a scary push poll about AVs by being skeptical. What is notable is how drastically different attitudes toward AVs are among those who have tried them or seen them on the road, vs those who haven't.
D.C. today: 48% say make robotaxis legal, 37% say no. San Francisco, where they're part of daily life: 60% to 28%. The more people see them, the more they want them.

A win for local journalism pushing on this issue! Kudos to @tjl @JHWeissmann @zaraleinorman
Interesting: @limebike has banned 1,000 users in D.C. over the last month for violating rules on the use of its e-scooters and bikes, including underage users, dangerous riding, and more. This comes amidst concerns over improper use and rule-breaking on the bikes and scooters.

Autonomous vehicles are like congestion pricing: Before being rolled out, people are opposed to the idea in theory. But after experiencing how great it is in practice, they become really supportive.
SF voters on robotaxis: Sept 2023: 44% support, 51% oppose July 2025: 67% support, 29% oppose What changed? People rode them. Robotaxi opposition peaks before anyone has ridden. D.C., New York and Massachusetts are deciding at peak fear and minimum experience.
