Our custom-built Fold-A-Phone machine is folding the iPhone Duo constantly, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, up until either one breaks. Catch the livestream every Monday through Friday on CNET's YouTube from 1pm to 5pm ET, starting Oct 26.

I love how shit like this is never done to Samsung phones. Why is Apple always under way harsher scrutiny?

I bet the cable will wear out before the phone

To simulate properly the test would need to allow the heat created in each fold to dissipate. Without doing so would compromise the results.

I bet the charging port goes first. 😆

That phone is going to have a line indent on the screen due to that fish line.

this does not coincide with real world usage. e very single open/close will not be done with constant force with everyday use. some people will slam the phone closed on occasion, some will aggressively open it. vice versa. i would take the results with a grain of salt

This test is missing the finger 👉 sliding of the crease, the issue is that under regular use the crease gets pushed more down and deu tight tolerances the screen gets pinched by the hinge...

It took six months to build this? Did you have an elementary school student engineer this?

It just took one drop!
PhoneBuff just released a drop-test their video for the iPhone Duo On the first drop, the hinge mechanism jammed and couldn’t open fully flat. 2 drops later the inner screen failed, for context, the Z fold 7/8 survived double the amount of drops before failing.

The opening must be set from different points. As it will give what's happening on real life.

Not going to control for heat dissipation recovery time from the coolant chamber? Programming a delay interval between folds, although less entertaining would produce more accurate results.

Can't wait to see which one lasts the longest!

Why is the charge port on the wrong portion?

Are you adding dust and lint like a normal pocket would have? Maybe even a penny, nickel... Car keys...
144
Show me one real user who actually unfolds their phone using a string like that.
96
This test doesn’t show real world usage though, the results would differ from normal everyday usage by actual people
343
I guess this shows the screen cracking is user error
390
Cool now add a normal amount of dust and dirt and hair And see if it keeps opening and closing

Why does Apple always get this special treatment? Has any other foldable been run through this sort of test by you or any other major outlets?

Charging cable will break first

Looks a lot more fair / realistic than pouring sand into the hinge
869
does it fold with usual dust and humidity, people do have in their pockets and hands?
759
What’s the point I’m sure Apple did this test themselves
937
Can someone explain to me why we didn’t do this with other foldables, or is it just because it’s an Apple foldable it gains the immediate attention

Don't stick a thumb in there. It'll break.
794
did he think apple rnd didnt do this on their hinges for 10000 repetitions?
592
Too perfect unfolding, that's no happens in real world!

You gonna do this to all other foldables?

Every time Apple produces a phone, you’ll discover a new way a testing…

Why the charge port on the front side Oo

what is stopping you from doing an actual 24/7 livestream?

@grok do the math how many cycles does the phone go through in a 24 hour period

@cnet out here doing the lords work!

It's the fact that people do stuff like this that I feel makes iPhone a much better phone because it's hard for engineers to ignore this type of destructive test, especially if you're gonna do it on your own dime. So please keep it up. Keep eating that phone up until they start making good ones. Not that it's not already good but you know if you find the fatal flaws hopefully, that means that the next generation will address those issues.
