🇵🇰 A Pakistani anti-terrorism court sentenced prominent human rights lawyers Imaan Mazari and her husband, Hadi Ali Chattha, to 10 years in prison on Thursday. Their sentences will run concurrently with additional one-year and two-year sentences for obstructing and assaulting government servants. Mazari and her husband were accused of holding a protest in 2024 that blocked a road, and thereby endangered an international cricket team’s security plans. They denied the charges, calling themselves “prisoners of conscience” targeted for their human rights work. Mazari’s mother, Shireen Mazari, a former member of Imran Khan’s cabinet, said that they were not allowed access to their lawyer or given key legal documents in the case. The couple had earlier been sentenced to 17 years in prison for social media posts. That sentence was suspended by Pakistan’s Supreme Court—they were re-arrested for the 2024 protest on the same day.
PAKISTAN: Responding to the conviction and ten-year imprisonment of Imaan Mazari-Hazir and Hadi Ali Chattha today by the Anti-Terrorism Court in Islamabad, Yasmine Ahmed, Senior Director for Regional Human Rights Impact at Amnesty International, said: “These convictions are an indictment of Pakistan’s justice system. This was not just Imaan and Hadi on trial, it was a test of the judiciary’s ability to uphold the principles of justice and the right to fair trial. It has failed that test miserably. It is clear that these ‘anti-terrorism’ charges are being used to punish Imaan and Hadi for their human rights advocacy.” Read more here: amnesty.org/en/latest/news/2…

📢As a Massachusetts constituent, I'm grateful and proud that my senator, @SenMarkey, is leading a Senate letter telling Sec. Rubio: ENOUGH. The letter calls for the release of Imran Khan and other political prisoners, targeted sanctions against officials responsible for serious human rights abuses, and human rights conditions on U.S. military assistance to Pakistan. It also raises concerns about transnational repression targeting Pakistani Americans and their families. This is not about interfering in Pakistan's internal affairs. It is about ensuring that U.S. policy does not enable repression, undermine democratic institutions, or provide unconditional support to those responsible for human rights violations. The future of Pakistan belongs to its people, not to Washington or its military establishment. Please take 30 seconds to sign @justfp's letter and urge your U.S. senators to join Senator Markey in standing for human rights, democratic freedoms, and accountability. Ask your senator to sign 👇 actionnetwork.org/letters/te…

We stand with @CPJAsia in demanding #JusticeForArshadSharif. Journalists cannot be killed without accountability. Pakistan’s authorities must ensure a transparent judicial process, establish the truth, and hold those responsible to account.

🇵🇰 EXCLUSIVE: IMRAN KHAN'S SONS SAY THE PAKISTANI GOVERNMENT IS TRYING TO KILL THEIR FATHER! I spoke again with Qasim and Sulaiman Khan, and this conversation was the most heartbreaking. Not only is their father, the former Prime Minister of Pakistan, still in solitary confinement, but his three courageous sisters, Aleema, Uzma and Noreen, have now also been arrested And when @PTIofficial supporters hit the streets, many were arrested, beaten, and even killed! Imran Khan’s sons say they haven't spoken to their father in over 6 months, nobody has seen him for 2 months, and they're increasingly worried about his deteriorating health. I asked them the hardest question of all: Do they still believe they’ll ever see their father again? Qasim admitted, he has very little hope, but they will never stop fighting I told them both I wouldn't give up hope. And I meant it. @Kasim_Khan_1999

🇵🇰 #Pakistan: I am deeply concerned by reports that human rights lawyers @ImaanZHazir and @AdvHadiali were denied access to their lawyers and objected to the manner of their presentation during proceedings inside Adiala jail, prompting the defense team to walk out. Jail trials must not undermine fair trial guarantees, access to counsel or the effective right to defense. Criminal charges should never be used as punishment for freedom of expression and human rights advocacy. (1/2)

Pakistan - State of emergency in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, imposition of governor rule and the deployment of armed forces Reports of arbitrary detentions of key leaders – including the provincial chief minister – and internet disruptions across the province raise concerns about the proportionality of these emergency measures. While states may, in strictly limited circumstances, derogate from their human rights obligations to respond to a public emergency that threatens the existence of the nation, emergency measures are not a blank cheque to crack down on human rights, silence dissent, or concentrate power. As Pakistan’s government arrests opposition leaders and suspends an elected provincial government, President Trump continues to embrace its military chief. The United States should stand with the Pakistani people, not enable political repression. We must press for the release of political prisoners, including Imran Khan. commondreams.org/news/us-bac…
