You advocated for the IRGC’s designation and said you asked the government to exempt conscripts. Yet critical questions remain unanswered.
Why were conscripts and their families not represented in those discussions? Who explained the realities of compulsory service? What role did the testimony and publications of individuals such as Golkar and Arabi play in shaping the information presented to decision-makers?
Hundreds of Iranian families are now facing devastating uncertainty. The government must answer for its decisions, but those involved in the advocacy process also owe these families transparency.
Mr. Ehsassi and Mr. Esmaeilion, we ask you to publicly answer these questions, clarify what safeguards for conscripts you advocated for, and explain what concrete steps you are taking to help families affected by this designation. Please engage directly with conscripts and their families and make their concerns heard.
These families deserve more than assurances. They deserve transparency, meaningful engagement, and action.

STOP REFUSING CONSCRIPTS Today we are standing peacefully in Ottawa, the heart of Canadian democracy, and we want every decision maker to understand why we came. We are families from every corner of this country: from Toronto and Edmonton, from Vancouver and Montreal, from Calgary, Halifax and Winnipeg. Many of us took time off work, drove for hours or flew across the country, and brought our children with us, because what is happening to our families is too important to stay silent about.
Many of the conscripts spent those months counting the days until they could leave. When their MANDATORY CONSCRIPTION ended, they left Iran to escape the regime and chose Canada as their new home, a country that promised freedom, fairness and the rule of law.
Here they rebuilt their lives from nothing. They studied again, worked long hours, paid taxes, volunteered in their communities and raised children who were born in Canada, speak English or French as their first language, and know no other home. They stood in Canadian streets against the regime they escaped. Today many of these same men are receiving procedural fairness letters that treat their forced service as membership in that regime.
A father who once guarded a gate because the law ordered him to is now told he may not belong in Canada. Families who have waited years for permanent residence are suddenly living in fear of losing everything. Children ask their parents every night whether they will have to leave.
We want to be clear about what we are asking for. We are not asking Canada to ignore security. We are not asking for exceptions or special treatment. We fully support holding the regime and its real members accountable.
What we are asking for is simple and deeply Canadian: a fair, individual review of each person, based on the facts of their own case and not on a blanket label. A forced conscript is not the same as a commander. Someone who was assigned is not the same as someone who joined. Canadian law is built on that kind of careful judgment, and our families deserve it too. Please meet with us while we are here in Ottawa. Please read our stories, look at our lives in Canada, and give every former conscript the chance to explain. We came peacefully, we will stay peaceful, and we will keep raising our voices until they are heard. Keep our families together.
