Hey everyone! I don't get on here much as it's kind of draining, but I'm RE-starting up my Substack posts to keep everyone posted on all the stuff I'm up to that's been keeping me so quiet elsewhere. ๐

I've noticed that I never see people say "that money could have been used to feed people" whenever Disney spends half a billion dollars on a Marvel movie.

โI canโt homeschool, I canโt teach my 12yo algebra!โ
Didnโt you take &pass all the algebra necessary for your High School Diploma?
"Yeah, but I donโt remember any of it!โ
So youโre going to have your kid go through the same failed process that yielded the same results for you?

tupac recorded 501 songs, but only 2 became top ten hits.
van gogh painted 2,100 paintings and only sold 1 while he was alive and it was 6 months before he died.
sabrina carpenter released 67 songs and five albums over the course of 10 years before she had her big hit "espresso."
glen powell spent 19 years trying to become an actor before "top gun: maverick" made him a star. 19 solid years.
and connor story spent 8 years waiting tables and he was ready to quit acting for good. and the day he almost got fired, he got an email and he found out that he got the lead actor role in "heated rivalry," the biggest acquired hbo show in history.
and you are giving up because you tried twice? or maybe 10 times?
look, a winner is just a loser that tried one more time and that's just it
winners lose more than losers even try.

Characters noticing the graffiti had stopped; a good example of an attention-grabbing setting detail to include among more obvious ones like dark, creepy, or ominous.
Also, I do not understand why people like going into these places. ๐

If you're writing a character who constantly makes poor choices and is at the absolute beginning of their character arc, this is a great example of their intro scene. I would love to see how this guy manages to save the realm at the end.

Iโm noticing a lot of foreigners who seem to not understand why weโd risk hundreds of lives, spend millions of dollars, and sacrifice several aircraft to rescue one guy. And the reason they donโt understand is also the reason people canโt be made American by a piece of paper.

Homeschooling was the greatest gift I ever got
3 hrs/day
Started college at 15 with a 29 ACT
Very little intervention or 1-on-1 work with my mom, she taught me to read and maintained structure and discipline and I did the work
I don't know who needs to hear this, but if you homeschool, you don't need to spend 6+ hours per day doing it.
Public school should not be your model.
What a typical homeschool day might look like:
- Kids wake up 8:30 - 9:00
- Kids start school around 10:00
- Kids are usually done by lunchtime. Sometimes they go a little bit after. Rest of the day is free.
- At night, the family reads together for 45-60 minutes.
Sometimes we go to the zoo.
Sometimes we take walks.
Sometimes they have an online class.
Sometimes they do nothing extra.
One day a week we go to our co-op and spend time with other families. They usually do a science experiment.
As kids reach middle school, they take on more responsibility for themselves, and school lasts a bit longer per day.
But at that point, your personal involvement doesn't increase drastically.
You already helped them grow and spread their wings.
They can fly a bit on their own.
