Today is the 16th anniversary of the death of Savita Halappanavar. Let’s never go back to those times
If those charged with managing public money (and handsomely paid to do so) are not fulfilling their duties, we need to know about it. If information is not properly made available to journalists it should be a matter of public concern. Please continue holding them to account.

Good to see the public took an interest in this one.
Glad to know some people still value journalism that pursues the mis-use of public funds.
This kind of work can take months to pull together as you have to find out when meetings took place; find out what happened at the meetings; and it can require the submission of multiple FoI requests.
I'm now facing a department whose press office ignores my queries. Government departments shouldn't be allowed to ignore the press in a democratic society.
(A Dept headed by a Minister who claims to be transparent).
A Department whose FoI team appears to have been told to, at best, delay information or, at worst, withhold information. It happened with this and is happening with a different story I've been chasing.

Amendments laid down by the Minister of Education seek to delay it's implementation indefinitely. It's crucial that these amendments are voted down. Children in communities broken by the Cost of Living Crisis, need urgent support.
We're very concerned about amendments to the Holiday Hunger Bill tabled at the last minute that would mean parents & children would have no guarantees about when, if ever, payments might begin. Read our joint press release adviceni.net/about/news/fami… #EndHolidayHunger #HolidayHunger

We are an ongoing and unprecedented economic crisis. Children deserve protection from disadvantage. Yet, in NI, our Minister is removing rights & is removing opportunities for children in poverty to level up.
The Education Minister surely has to take this seriously? To say that his behaviour has been cavalier is to understate the matter. This is just plain reckless - and it could potentially affect all of our children.
Mental Health Champion warns new school curriculum could harm pupil wellbeing and seeks independent review
TransformED NI outlines a strategy for the transformation of teaching and learning
Northern Ireland’s Mental Health Champion has written a critical response to a consultation on school curriculum reform, saying it is “unclear how key stakeholders, particularly children and young people, were involved in developing the content”.
It notes particular concerns arise relating to the Personal, Social, Civic and Careers (PSCC) subject, where “significant changes were made without the agreement of the expert team responsible for drafting the subject”.
The correspondence adds: “The Office of the Mental Health Champion provided feedback on an earlier draft version of the PSCC framework, and it is now evident that many positive elements of the agreed final version were removed from the version that was put out for consultation.
“We need clarity on how, and why, these modifications were undertaken.”
Not surprised - this Minister is making decisions that will impact all of our children, but declines to listen to experts, children or parents. He needs to be called to account.

Today 200 Language Assistants were welcomed to Dublin. Meanwhile in NI @CCEA_info has shut German 🇩🇪 , and @Education_NI has created a Key Stage 3 Curriculum which is unfit for purpose. One island. Two very different approaches to Languages.
Just read through some of the comments on the awful Christa Pike debacle. I had thought when I heard it first that it might make the USA reconsider their death penalty. The comments suggest not - the vindictiveness is horrific.

Tell the truth about Orange marches through Catholic nationalist areas.
Everybody knows the core purpose of Orange Order parades through Catholic nationalist areas where they’re not welcome. They told us themselves years ago:
Here’s an excerpt from Rev John Brown one the Orange Order’s most respected historians.
He stated the reasons for marching through Catholic nationalist areas as follows:
1) Asserting Ownership of the Public
Highway: Parading through these areas was a physical assertion of the "Queen's highway," reinforcing the belief that members have a fundamental civil liberty and legal entitlement to walk any public route, regardless of local population shifts.
2)Intimidation and Deterrence:
Orange marches—patterned after military formations with flags, drums, and historical weaponry—were explicitly designed "not only to intimidate potential rebels, but also to excite and attract well-disposed onlookers."
3)Community Cohesion:
The Orange Order binds together Protestants across differing political parties and social classes, the public ritual of the parade is the "cement" that holds these disparate elements together.
Lest we forget 🤔
I cannot believe that we are in this situation. I hope that those stoking up anger and hostility will eventually feel shame. I hope that nobody is hurt or worse. I hope we can protect the peace. We should not contemplate a return to the dark days. If I had religion, I’d pray.

"Every time we've had these squeezes on welfare recipients, what we've actually seen.. is an increase in child poverty & in work poverty.."
@AyoCaesar on #bbcqt. Spot on.
The booze and cigarettes argument is a smokescreen. If harmful spending were the issue, everyone’s purchases would be policed.
A benefits card singles out one group of adults as unfit to manage their own money.
That’s not welfare reform. It’s state-sanctioned stigma.
Tories would prevent long-term jobless spending benefits on alcohol and cigarettes bbc.in/4hJepP7
Ok, so cutting benefits cost more than it saved in America and in Australia. Given this evidence, why do Kemi Badenoch and the Tories think it will save money in the UK? Have they even looked at the evidence? Or are they steadfastly ignoring it to demonise UC recipients?
Replying to @JoePJRobertson
You won’t because you won’t win an election and the same scheme was abolished in Australia in 2023 because it cost more to run than it saved
Cutting benefits doesn’t get people into work. If you want to reduce the benefits bill, you need to focus relentlessly on the barriers to work.
That means tackling the high cost of childcare, creating good jobs outside London, and addressing the public health crisis.
Making people poorer doesn’t make it easier to get a job. This policy from the Conservatives won’t achieve its objectives, is likely to be unworkable, and could simply push up spending in other areas as a result.

This makes no sense.
If work does not leave people better off, fix wages, housing costs, childcare and the tax-benefit system.
Blaming claimants for an economy politicians designed is just avoiding the real failure.
I’m sure the principals, teachers and parents of all the schools refused permission to transform to Integrated status are gutted. There’s a lot of work in applying in the hope of a better, more inclusive future. To have that hope dashed arbitrarily must be devastating.
