It's all the floorplans! There's nowhere to host! Bedrooms sized to watch TV in bed. Huge walk-in closets. En-suite baths. Massive Kitchens ... but tiny living rooms. And no space for dining tables “Apartments are built for Netflix and chill. We’re building for aloneness”

KF crying. Tom Moore with fists raised. All-time locker room moments.
A celebration well earned.

I had not realised before that the Bronze Age Collapse was literally *caused* by iron. Bronze age powers like the Egyptians, Hittites and Babylonians used bronze weapons, made by combining copper and tin. Tin was so scarce that only the richest and most powerful groups could access it and the bronze weapons it allowed. (Tin was so rare that it was being transported from Cornwall to the Middle East more than 1000 years BC.) The scarcity of tin gave these empires a near-monopoly on violence. Iron weapons are not actually any better than bronze ones – they're not stronger or easier to work with, as I'd assumed. They're just much, much easier to mass produce once you have bloomeries, which are the first furnaces that were hot enough to melt iron in a way that made them useable for weapons. Bloomeries meant that iron ore, which was widespread, could be used to make weapons anywhere. That led to warlords, bandits and city-states rising in a massive decentralization of military power, which the Bronze Age empires were unable to resist. After the invention of the bloomery, skeletons show a measurable increase in weapon-inflicted injuries. 'Destruction layers' with bones and signs of burning have been found from this time at archaeological sites including Troy. Ancient writers – including Herodotus, Ovid, and the writers of the Old Testament – believed the invention of iron had unleashed a new age of violence. New at Works in Progress, WEAPONS OF MASS DECENTRALIZATION: how iron itself brought about the Bronze Age Collapse. And what technologies could do the same today? worksinprogress.co/issue/wea…

This would actually be great
Trump says he’s open to Chinese automakers manufacturing in the US with American workers. He’s said this several times previously. But it obviously has more significance this time with Xi Jinping’s upcoming visit.

"Housing is one of the largest ways things are going wrong for young people. And people blame that on capitalism, because that's the status quo. But, in fact, housing is one of the sectors of our economy that is least exposed to the free market." @emmma_camp_ joins @maggiemoda and @SamRaus1 for the pilot episode of Breaking Containment, Young Voices' new podcast about the stories that shape the timeline and front page. Full episode out this Friday at 3 PM ET.

3 of those 9 were undrafted (Nwankpa, Large, and Stevens). Iowa gets more than its share of players drafted, but the number of Iowa players who make NFL rosters despite being undrafted is insane
Hawkeyes in the NFL: Rookie Class Made the 53-man roster - Gennings Dunker (PIT) - Kaden Wetjen (PIT) - Logan Jones (CHI) - Hayden Large (CHI) - Max Llewellyn (MIA) - Karson Sharar (ARI) - Beau Stephans (SEA) - Xavier Nwankpa (KC) - Drew Stevens (WAS) Released - Mark Gronowski (MIA) - Aaron Graves (BAL) - Ethan Hurkett (KC) - TJ Hall (NO)

Quincy, Washington shows what a good data center deal looks like. About 30 facilities shoulder an estimated 57% of local property taxes, funding a $120M high school, library, hospital, and police and fire stations. cnn.com/2026/08/11/business/…

Iowa and AD Beth Goetz have reached an agreement on an extension through 2032. Goetz's pay increases from $850k to $1.4 million, which is about the Big Ten midpoint. Goetz has transformed Iowa athletics in 3 years with personnel decisions (replacing Fran McCaffery with Ben McCollum, hiring Jan Jensen among other moves) and in fundraising. Iowa set a department fundraising record at $103.7 million in FY26.
