Does direct instruction work? Some claimed Stockard et al. (2018) meta-analysis didn't compare DI to inquiry-based teaching for math. We reanalyzed the data. DI was significantly MORE effective than inquiry-based (d = 0.60, 95% CI = 0.49 to 0.70). @CECMembership @NCTM @ehanford

My hometown newspaper wrote about @ProjectReadAI The article also covers new quasi-experimental research from @UFLiteracy about the Project Read Tutor's impact (SD = 0.47) on foundational literacy skills, particularly for struggling K-2 readers (2-4x as likely to reach benchmark by Spring with 15-30 min per week of dosage) in a district pilot with 4 schools and 800+ kids. The evidence is very promising, but still early. I like to say we're building the Moneyball of literacy. We iterate on the ground, and aim to maximize the efficacy per minute through granular, rigorous evaluation. And make it extremely accessible at $15 per student annually. In the top of 3rd inning, more to come

Congrats to everyone in HCPS who has worked so hard for this achievement!
We are proud to announce that Hillsborough County Public Schools has earned an “A” district grade from the @EducationFL for the first time in more than a decade! This milestone follows a year of remarkable student achievement, reflecting all the hard work and dedication from our students, administrators, teachers, support staff, and families. We are ready to continue to build on this momentum this upcoming school year. Thank you to our HCPS Family for helping us lead the way!

Flashlight Day for #UFLI was so fun! They loved the decodable stories I wrote for them, because I used their names as the main characters. #literacy #reading #flashlight #chaseinnovators #joy @UFLiteracy

It was a joy to join my friends @ValContessePhD and @HollyLanePhD in Gainesville this week. We shared how are @ProjectReadAI and @UFLiteracy are narrowly tailoring AI to specific use cases that truly support teachers with some of the thorniest challenges in phonics instruction: 1) spelling analysis, 2) small group planning and 3) increasing/individualizing student practice
Celebrating @ailiteracyday at UF reminded us of something important: the more advanced our technology gets, the more irreplaceable the human touch becomes. If we want these new tools to meaningfully improve education, human connection has to stay front and center.
