I already knew this story, and there’s nothing sad about it, but listening to it nonetheless nearly brought me to tears. There is an ineffable ethos I believe in as an engineer, and this is the closest I have come to seeing it expressed. cc: @corecursive corecursive.com/shipping-gra…

This would be important enough, especially with older higher-risk VA cohort. Plus, those who get repeatedly infected and/or detected are obviously more frail than the undetected because milder/asymptomatic case. 8.3% of third infections are immunocompromised vs. 1.1% of first.

I'm going to keep lurking on here, but my tribe (mostly tech/maker folks) is making Mastodon a compelling place to hang out. If you're over there too, I'm @acj@mas.to 👋

(Among other things, changes that are “lightweight”, “no-brainer”, “quick-fix” are the ones where I’m most likely to make some dumb-ass goof.)

Very occasionally we get a front-row seat to the part of science where an educated observer looks at the data and says “That’s weird, and I’m dubious the conventional explanation works.” Everything starts from there.
I’m shocked by the streamers in the ejecta. In ordinary granular splash experiments we see nothing like this. A few musings about this in a thread… /1

BREAKING: White House issues new policy that will require, by 2026, all federally-funded research results to be freely available to public without delay, ending longstanding ability of journals to paywall results for up to 1 year. Coverage coming on @ScienceInsider.

why do unix assembly files use a .s extension? someone asked me today, and i didn’t know, so i asked ken. the .s is for source, just like .o is for object.

A map of the entire universe to (log) scale, by @budassiuniverse. Spacecraft, planets, large-scale galactic structures - they are all there if you zoom in. pablocarlosbudassi.com/2021/…

One of the most important engineering principles my dad taught me is you never, ever, put the complicated part of a toilet in the drain section.
Replying to @hipsterelectron
I'm still waiting for someone to combine a blendtec with a toilet and finally make plungers obsolete.

Are there any good books about “natural experiments”? For ex, in the Before Times we couldn’t tell how much city noise was coming from construction v. restaurants v. passenger vehicles. As things slowly spin back up after quarantine, we can kinda tell. How to find more examples?

A compelling case from @stevenbjohnson on reframing risk in a way people can more easily understand & assess by using a standardized unit of measure (the micromort!) and relating it to a familiar analogy buff.ly/3Hza3ph

Finally got around to putting my #nanowrimo book on the web. It was fun to reread after ~11 years. The spoken dialogue was the hardest part, and it shows, but whatever. Glad I did it. acj.sh/escape-velocity-book

#NASAWebb is fully deployed! 🎉 With the successful deployment & latching of our last mirror wing, that's: 50 major deployments, complete. 178 pins, released. 20+ years of work, realized. Next to #UnfoldTheUniverse: traveling out to our orbital destination of Lagrange point 2!

Journalism has *no* idea how to cover science as process. Journalists want final, definitive answers when science constantly tests and retests questions, leading to more questions. Thus journalists skew the public perception of science, doing a great disservice.

since everyone is talking about log4j/supply chains an experiment years ago i calculated 1-bit offset utf8 strings of the top few hundred npm packages and registered packages under them they received thousands of hits per week from machines trying to download and execute them
