Nutritonal epi studies from Harvard prove 1 thing over & over again: Already-healthy, well-educated, white professionals deeply invested in the pursuit of health as a middle class virtue will always report eating foods *they've been told* are healthy. tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1…

I recommend a keto breakfast to all of my patients. If they want to know the benefits of a keto breakfast I send them to menshealth.com/nutrition/a25… I send them to dietdoctor.com to learn which foods to eat for a keto breakfast.
Many of us who work with patients with obesity start the conversation about stalls and regaining at the beginning. We know that most people regain, no matter what diet they used to lose weight. Why pretend otherwise? Better to prepare realistically.

Understanding that we are all likely to regain weight at times is so critical
Its most important to understand it’s not your fault and you can start to evaluate the best next step forward.
Coaching/counseling IMVHO is critical
It’s not the diet but the diet/fail mentality

Hey, if you're looking for things to read in this weird li'l Bermuda Triangle of a week, may I direct you to this piece that I'm really proud of:
A few weeks ago, I went to Nashville and talked to Jason Isbell about why country music is so protective of nostalgia and the story of white victimhood. As you can imagine, he had a lot to say: buzzfeednews.com/article/ela…
I think "guidelines" have a lot to do with multiple government (or other) entities "speaking as a unified voice."
When there's little chance for actual consensus (or enforcement) they signal "we're on this!"when we aren't.
Replying to @ibogost
Perhaps when you have no intention or capability of enforcement but you want to empower those who might have that intention/capability you call it a “guideline”. As I understand it we get guidelines from those who can’t produce mandates, but may think smaller entities should.

To me, it would be easier to live with if it were that simple. Instead, it is a tangled history of politics AND economics: see eathropology.com/2012/11/13/…
There is so much cultural (and other) violence in one-size-fits-all national public health dietary guidelines:
That's actually the purpose of the GL! For industry to have standards & definitions to "game"!
What other purpose could they possibly serve?! "No one follows them!" [Says every RD ever.]
Replying to @ZacharyWenger @GreedSpam
That you are dreaming that ultra-processed foods will help folks meet the GL. We've tried that experiment in Australia with the 'health stars' & the food industry just gamed them (just as they've gamed the GL anyway). Even easier with plant-based protein foods.
A brilliant idea! I am putting together a holiday menu for my family's gathering & I believe I will include some version of this! ❤️
PS: I also keep getting requests for a Thai food teaching workshop (we are going to do a Polish-Ukranian pierog- making evening too!)

@ahhite wrote a humorous article about a healthy man with T2 Pre-Diabetes who visits a nutritionist who recommends he discontinue his decade-long low carb diet eathropology.com/2015/09/29/…
I'm saying that we set off on a fool's errand in 1977 by prescribing - get this? - ONE single dietary pattern to EVERYONE over the age of two in order to reduce the risk of ALL Chronic Diseases Known to Mankind–including obesity, which wasn’t even a disease at the time.

Sounds like you're suggesting we could get rid of the whole grains and veg oil then, and eat butter instead for the prevention of CD . 😅
Oh dear. Have you forgotten so quickly? Saturated fat & cholesterol are components of "whole foods" & we seriously cannot advocate for anyone eating those things.
Also, how many "whole grains" or "veg oils" are actually "whole foods"? LOLOLOL. That's right. They aren't.
Replying to @ahhite
So why not have a healthy eating guideline that says something like 'eat a nutritious mix of whole food' - my understanding is that's what you'd advocate as a dietician for basic healthy eating? That would be your answer to someone who knows nothing about nutrition?
Good questions. But we need to back that up a bit. Where did all this "harmful" fake food come from & why? Remember that taking the fat out of milk doesn't make milkfat disappear from the food supply. Rather, it becomes cheap cheese for cheap cheesy pizza. This happened
Replying to @ahhite
Really appreciate your work around this issue :) A question: how does your argument hold up in a 'food environment' that is saturated with harmful fake food? How should the social context be factored into (non) production of healthy eating guidelines? #UltraProcessedFood
the DGA were & are central to the development of how our current "food environment" looks and acts. It did not emerge spontaneously from the forehead of Proctor & Gamble.
