Electoral reform junkies will be laying low for a while from today. Full list PR such as that used in Israel is the purest form of their fix and itโ€™s the most embarrassing. Fetishising proportionality over accountability is hard to defend.

Itโ€™s strange, isnโ€™t it? When we talk about the Post Office scandal, everyone agrees it was a horrific series of miscarriages of justice. Innocent people had their lives and reputations destroyed. Some were imprisoned. Some took their own lives. Others died still living under the cloud of false accusations. Whistleblowers were ignored. Alarm bells rang. Politicians put their fingers in their ears. And the suffering continued. Nobody disputes that this was a terrible scandal. But what if I told you that another horrifying scandal is unfolding right now, one that is arguably even worse? What if I told you that vulnerable children are being harmed, their lives irrevocably changed by healthcare professionals following an ideology promoted by government, the media, schools and corporations? And that, despite the evidence being publicly available, most people have little idea of the scale of the harm, how many children have already been affected or how many continue to be harmed? How many people know that @nickwallis, the investigative journalist who played a pivotal role in exposing the Post Office scandal, is now investigating this issue, believing itโ€™s a โ€œhugeโ€ story. Iโ€™m talking, of course, about trans ideology. The brainwashing of vulnerable children into believing there are multiple genders, that they may have been born in the wrong body, and that life-altering medication or even surgery might make them happier. This has been going on for years, and it is happening now. The BBC has been front and centre in promoting this ideology. A generation of young people has been encouraged to believe that biological sex is irrelevant and that what really matters is their gender โ€œidentityโ€. The harms are manifold. Yet because so much of the progressive left has invested in this ideology, the truth is emerging painfully slowly. Those who raise safeguarding concerns are too often dismissed or vilified rather than heard. Just as with the Post Office scandal, I believe the full horror will explode into the public consciousness in the years ahead. But this time, the responsibility will be far more widely spread. If you care about children, particularly the most vulnerable, you should care about this. This isnโ€™t simply about men using womenโ€™s toilets, although the subjugation of biological womenโ€™s rights and safeguards to the demands of trans-identifying men is appalling in itself. Itโ€™s about vulnerable children, the adults who are supposed to protect them, and the irreversible consequences of putting ideology ahead of safeguarding. The harm being inflicted on children in the name of trans ideology is unforgivable.

Spurs fans were happy on Saturday when we beat Chelsea 2-0 at the Bridge. Memorable obviously but nothing beats the Arse losing to Fleetwood. Glorious. Just utterly delicious.

The UN harbors a moral fugitive who spews hatred for America, the West, Jews, and Israel. Francesca Albanese is institutional poison, doing grave damage to the UN, and tarnishing the work of brave UN personnel who risk their lives to feed the starving and keep the peace. ย  I know it. You know it. All that remains is to do something about it. Start by saying publicly what you say privately: Albanese must go. @AmbUNReform

This is an absurd campaign. Is the New West End Company going to rescind or breach its contracts for the use of Harry Potter intellectual property and the completed installation of the lights? No. Can the Mayor intervene in this and would or should he? No, no, and no
Jolyon's Good Law Project now harassing the Mayor's office because the Oxford Street lights will be Harry Potter themed and therefore trans-exclusionary.

This ministerial letter fails to engage with any of the substantial criticisms of the draft Conversion Practices Bill. The bill isnโ€™t compatible with rights to family life, to free expression and to live in a society governed by a predictable, comprehensible criminal code.

The Rooney-Rushdie comparison is not simply the folly of theatrical fools. It is far more dangerous than that. The claim blurs the particular horror of Rushdie's persecution and will unchallenged blind us to real evil.

And she would have to live in hiding under threat of death for almost 40 years.
For the Sally Rooney - Salman Rushdie parallel to work, a major Jewish leader would have had to call for her murder, gangs of marauding Jews would have had to burn down bookstores, and a Jewish extremist would have had to stab her eye out with a knife.

A Cornish pasty was built so that a man a mile underground with arsenic on his hands could eat a hot dinner holding it by a handle he then threw away. The crust is the point. A proper one is shortcrust rolled thick enough to survive a shift in a tin miner's jacket, crimped along one side into a thick rope of pastry that stays cold while the middle stays hot. The miner held the crimp, ate the rest, and dropped the crimp down the shaft for the knockers, the spirits of the mine, which was the polite name for keeping the arsenic out of his mouth. Inside was skirt of beef, chopped not minced, with potato, swede and onion, all raw, sealed in and cooked together so the beef fat ran through the vegetables and the juice stayed in the case. No gravy, because gravy leaks. A good one had the initials of the man it belonged to cut into the corner so the right pasty got to the right miner. Some had meat at one end and jam at the other, and you knew which end from the mark. It fed Cornwall's miners for two centuries, and when the mines died the miners took it to Mexico, to Michigan, to South Australia, and there are pasty shops in all three to this day with Cornish names over the door. The thing about it is how much of the animal was in it. Skirt is the diaphragm, a cut the supermarket will not stock, cheap, hard-working, full of flavour and fat, and the whole dinner was built round it. The vegetables were there to stretch the beef and soak up what it gave off. Since 2011 the name has been protected by law, which means the pasty in the motorway services, made with minced beef, a glossy lid and a filling that was cooked before it went in, can only call itself Cornish if it is made in Cornwall, and some of the worst of them are. The miner's dinner was a cut of beef in a pastry handle. The modern one is a pastry handle looking for the beef.

If Salman Rushdieโ€™s fatwa happened today, how many of these signatories would sign a letter supporting him? Most would be too afraid, many would think he deserved it. I doubt Rooney herself would support him. The comparison is fatuous and disgraceful.
If you ever sought out the novels of Sally Rooney in bookshops โ€“ when that was still possible โ€“ youโ€™d know they sit in the fiction stacks adjacent to the novels of another SR whose books have been withdrawn in dastardly political circumstances. Until last week, โ€œRooneyโ€ and โ€œRushdieโ€ had little in common beyond being shelfmates; now they have more than just a physical proximity. @tanjil_rashid_: This is censorship by other means newstatesman.com/comment/202โ€ฆ
