The silver lining of American sanctions on Rwanda is that they force Africans to think more critically about this conflict rather than blindly accepting and regurgitating cheap talking points.
For years, the dominant narrative has been that Rwanda loots the DRC on behalf of the West.
Yet the West never truly left the Congo, nor did it need Rwanda to plunder Congo’s resources.
In fact, many of the mining assets now operated by Chinese companies were previously owned by Western firms.
Now, with the US panicking about China’s dominance in the Congolese mining sector, and imposing sanctions on actors it sees as threatening the position of its puppet Tshisekedi, it is time for Africans to step back and critically examine the narratives they have been fed.
Perhaps the most important question is not simply who is looting the Congo, but whose interests are being served, who controls the resources, and who gets to decide the future of the country.
Investigations in Brussels about $ millions stolen by Tshisekedi, family and associates.
Tell us about it or shut up.
After having waged war with #DRC's Joseph Kabila during many years, the #Rwandan regime now sides with him. Understandable as @PaulKagame supports #M23 and wants to continue the plunder of Congolese resources. #US sanctions are the price for opportunism. newtimes.co.rw/article/40040…

So, Rwanda should SURRENDER AND MAKE THE PERISHING FASTER?! They didn't survive Genocide to just come and grant Tshisekedi& Americans a CHEAP VICTORY- WHAT THEY COULDN'T ACHIEVE ON THE BATTLEFIELD to FLUKE it through cowardly SANCTIONS which punish UNARMED CIVILIANS.
🇺🇸🇷🇼🇨🇩 Weeks after Tim Kennedy was shot three times in eastern Congo... Washington sanctioned the army he was fighting
Treasury hit Rwanda’s Ministry of Defense for deploying thousands of troops alongside the M23 rebels in North and South Kivu, and Zigama Credit and Savings Society for moving the money that buys their weapons and launders the gold that comes out of rebel-held mines into Rwanda.
That is the same war Erik Prince’s contractors are in on the Congolese side, under a contract to secure and tax the mining areas Washington wants American companies in, and the September ambush that wounded Kennedy and killed a former New Zealand commando happened on one of those mining-revenue operations.
The sanctions put the US government where Prince already was: on Tshisekedi’s side against Kigali, which was Washington’s Africa partner until the minerals deal made Congo worth more.
Rwanda now has a choice between pulling its troops out of the Kivus or watching its defense ministry get cut off from dollars, and M23 has to decide whether to keep fighting with its bank frozen.

Brilliant analysis.
Mediation, American style:
1. Sanction the side with a real cause not the genocidal alliance
2. Ask the genocidal alliance to neutralize itself not the force (M23) with the actual cause and capacity to do so
3. Refuse to sanction mercenaries (Eric Prince) involved in the very conflict you are mediating.
On these bases, you would be a fool to conclude that an outcome of peace is being sought by the mediator.
Also note: every time Tshisekedi has domestic pressure in Kinshasa, Massad Boulos (whose son has business interests with Tshisekedi) pulls a trick out of his hat to distract and scatter that pressure.
Think: How can the U.S announce an operation plan to neutralize the FDLR and the following day sanction the Rwanda’s Ministry of Defense - not the FDLR or its ally the FARDC. These two actions are a contradiction that is only possible via Boulos’ ability to pull the cat out of that hat for reasons noted in the preceding paragraph.

This vile “attack in a dark alley” comment trivializes the FDLR’s murderous actions, as well as the Rwandan and Congolese lives endangered by the genocidal FDLR. This is how lightly the DRC government treats its own financing and support of the militia, instead of honouring its commitment in the Washington Accords to neutralize the FDLR. DRC officials touring the world to sanitize the FDLR and blame Rwanda will not deliver peace.
Mr. Nagy, a threat, perceived or real, is not equivalent to thousands killed and millions displaced. When you served in government, would you have equated fear of an attack in a dark alley with decades of violence, rape and forced displacement? “Sanction both sides” erases that distinction—and suggests Congolese lives count for less. They do not.

This is stupid. Zigama doesn’t hold Gold Reserves.
Unless the argument is about proceeds from gold being deposited in Zigama.
Only fools will buy the justification for sanctioning Zigama.

On the contrary, the sanctions are to relieve the panic in Kinshasa due to Kabila’s move. It is Boulos’ counter move on behalf of his family’s business partner, Tshisekedi.
Note that it also happened when a General in the FARDC defected to join Kabila. Subsequently, Kinshasa issued directives against the movement of senior officers for any reason.

There will be no lasting peace in the DRC under the Washington Accords until the US recognizes, as clearly outlined in the agreement, that its economic interests must be balanced against Rwanda’s security interests and the legitimate security concerns of Congolese Tutsis.
Also, in this part of the continent, Africans are the custodians of their land. We are heirs to millennia-old civilizations. Those who wish to trade with us must never forget that.
If the US wants to be objective in helping end the long running Rwanda/DRC face-off in Eastern Congo, then sanctioning only one side will not help. The Tshisekedi Govt has its own proxies that threaten Rwanda, so why not sanction all the troublemakers?

Boulos has to occasionally appear to deliver something for his family’s business partner, Tshisekedi.

What’s the point of sanctioning Zigama CSS, an entity already effectively under sanctions, given that it is, so to speak, owned by the already-sanctioned RDF?
Are the Americans still appeasing Tshisekedi’s tantrums?
Still no sanctions against those arming the FDLR genocidaires.
for a country that was torn to pieces not so long ago, written off by the entire 🌍, yet whose people picked themselves up &rebuilt their nation piece by piece, rwanda is now standing tall, dreaming big &attracting 🌍-class talent. this, too, shall pass. it's a storm in a teacup.
Ariko sha wangenje make?! Ubu utabona excitement yawe ni nde?
Ese ukeka ko hari icyo u Rwanda rutabonye kikaba kije ubu?!😉
There is no dichotomy here. One word explains everything: minerals. Other than that, the US never cared about people being exterminated. Never. We lived it in 1994, saw it in the following years till today. We should never expect anything from them and always plan for the worse.

This China talk feels oddly familiar in a way. I’ve been unfortunate enough to meet some African brothers and sisters that preach about their “democracies” and lament 🇷🇼 for supposedly being stuck with our leader. I wish it were true actually. I wish we were stuck with him, at least for a very, very long time. They don’t even pretend to believe that he’s a bad leader, just that he must be changed “because that’s how it goes”. Ngo that’s the rules. Lmao.
Musical chairs is a game. What kind of perverse system thinks it tasteful to play with people’s lives.
They’ll make you believe you’re worse off having progress imposed on you, than in getting to choose between varying forms of decay.

The FDLR and its genocidal ideology pose an existential threat to the entire region, much as Nazism did to Europe. It is baffling that lessons from history seem to go unheeded in this part of Africa, while parts of Europe appear to have forgotten the very lessons their own history should have taught them.
That said, it is encouraging to see South African officials realigning with Mandela’s position on these genocidal forces.
The FDLR must be decisively neutralised.

There is no such thing as the Rwandan genocide.
In January 2018, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution updating the name of the annual observance from the "Genocide in Rwanda" to the "International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda"
Investigations. Tell us about Tshisekedi’s millions that were seized in Belgium or shut up.
Confirms that @FGoloobaMutebi is totally 'Rwandanised': taking everything seriously without the slightest sense of irony. Perhaps he should return to Uganda to be re-educated. I'll add 😉, otherwise he'll take this seriously😇.
