Loooooooooooooooool this country is in trouble if the only big ideas anyone ever seems to have is raising taxes
Hannah Peaker from the @NEF explains that if you equalise capital gains tax with income tax so you tax wealth at the same rate as work, along with sorting out some of the problems with CGT, some estimates say you could raise £19.7 billion a year.
It’s been 5 years @thisisangel @4everBrandy
Please. Let’s discuss. I can sort out the licensing myself if you like. I’m a fast learner, I promise!!!

So let me get this right: if you’re a corrupt right-wing leader who loses an election and is under investigation you get asylum?
If you’re a mom and kid fleeing violence you’re not?

The amount of people I know who got paid their salaries into their Monzo accounts and lost £1000’s in the process…. Natural selection
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Monzo is a PRA-authorised UK bank (FRN 730427) with eligible deposits protected by the FSCS up to £120,000 per person; no reports show widespread losses from salaries paid into Monzo accounts.

Heads up that in the last decade, the full-time equivalent salary on the minimum wage is up 77% from £15k to £26.5k
Meanwhile both the personal allowance and the 40% tax band threshold haven't moved in seven years
In 2016 someone earning minimum wage paid just £795 of tax a year; now they pay £2,773

Seeing this visualised is insane but also explains so much about the high earner discourse
Time to post my biannual “how artificially compressed are British wages”.
Rising minimum wage and a 50k+ p/a tax bracket that runs to 40% of earnings, and hasn’t adjusted for inflation. This form of artificial wage compression has turned everyone in Britain into low productivity tax cattle - you have zero incentive to become anything other here.
This is also a form of ambition and productivity compression.
