I’ve been rooting for #Ramayana since day one. I genuinely want this film to go global and take our stories to the world.
That said, ill-informed takes like these do little to serve the epic or its legacy.
Ravana was a rapist, not some misunderstood anti-hero in need of redemption. The Valmiki Ramayana recounts his sexual assault of Rambha, a celestial woman who was his nephew Nalakubera’s intended wife. His intelligence, scholarship and devotion do not erase his transgressions.
We’ve had enough attempts to turn Karna into a hero. We don’t need another exercise in glorifying Ravana.
