One of the SANDF’s first peacekeeping missions, in an era that saw South Africa become one of the biggest contributors to UN and AU peace missions over the next decade.
With the recent withdrawal from MONUSCO, the SANDF is no longer part of any UN or AU missions.
South African soldiers board a South African Airways plane at the Waterkloof air base in Pretoria on their way to Burundi as part of a peace deal to end an eight-year civil war.
This first group of 250 soldiers is part of a force of 700 South African soldiers to be deployed in Burundi to secure exiled politicians who will take part in forming a transitional government.
