In a new Science study, researchers report that specific regions dense in cytosine and guanosine dinucleotides are epigenetically modified during inflammation to enable gene expression and that these changes persist during the animal’s lifetime. The finding has implications for understanding how the genome determines the longevity of memory, which affects tissue fitness. Learn more in a new #SciencePerspective: scim.ag/3PCKQU1

about 1 in 500 men have an XXY karyotype, i.e. two X chromosomes. 75% of them are unaware of this. associations include: - 16x odds of infertility - 5x odds of venous thrombosis - several others Interesting study!

Happy to introduce AlphaGenome, @GoogleDeepMind's new AI model for genomics. AlphaGenome offers a comprehensive view of the human non-coding genome by predicting the impact of DNA variations. It will deepen our understanding of disease biology and open new avenues of research.

🚨Just published in Clinical Epigenetics! 1 in 3 women ≤30 with triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) carry a hidden BRCA1 epimutation — missed by genetic tests. 🧬 Detected with MethylDetect™ MS-HRM. 👉 doi.org/10.1186/s13148-025-0… #BRCA1 #Epigenetics #TNBC #MethylDetect

X chromosome dosage compensation through the lens of human genetics! Females have two X chromosomes, but males have one. To compensate for this, one X is randomly inactivated in female cells. Some genes escape from this inactivation. Because both males and females are functionally hemizygous for chromosome X, X-linked genes are thought to upregulate their expression to match autosomes (Ohno's hypothesis, 1967) With availability of large scale human genetic data, we can test the effect of these dosage compensations through genetic analysis! Using UK Biobank genetic data, here the authors tested 48 quantitative traits separately in males and females and found: - Chr X heritability (X-h2) is ~2x higher in males than females (supports random X inactivation in females that dilutes the average) - In height, X-h2 in females > males suggesting more frequent escape from X inactivation for height-associated genes - per allele effect is larger for X genes than autosomal genes (supporting Ohno's hypothesis) Fascinating work! Woke or biology? There are actually more than the basic “male” XY & “female” XX sexes. Why? Because biology also creates people with single X chromosomes, or extra chromosomes like XXX, XXY, XYY, or XXX+, plus many 🧬genes. 👉All I’m asking is— please be kind to others. Thanks🙏
