The water mill in my friends property, ‘Zostel’. A picturesque spot besides a perennial stream, near Kempty Falls, Mussoorie. Mill can grind a sack of grain in 2 hours. It has an adjustment gear to determine how fine the flour is ground. Memories of similar water mills in NE.
Visited Siaini ( corn village) in Tehri, Uttarakhand today. The cleanest village I have come across. Corn bundles decorate the front of all homes. Every house has an aperture in the wood panel walls, for the bee hive. Presence of bees is considered auspicious. A must visit.
It was a great honour to meet the Kanpur Aligs. Their warmth and affection was incomparable. Efforts to spread the light of education is praiseworthy.

Roughly 3,000 students study at Mohammad Ali Jauhar University. Around 40% of them are not Muslim. They are Hindus, Sikhs and Christians, sitting in the same classrooms as everyone else.
Now Bisht's UP government has ordered the demolition of 38 of the university's 40 buildings on its roughly 400 acre campus. The authorities say only two structures ever had proper plan approvals.
So fix that. Regularize the buildings. Fine the trust if it broke a rule. Grant the approvals now. What could possibly be worth demolishing an entire university?
And ask the obvious question the students are already asking. Have the houses, the government offices, the police stations in that same area all been checked for approvals too? If not, why was only this university singled out?
Have you ever once heard of a government that demolishes a university?
Think about what kind of state sends a bulldozer toward classrooms and laboratories where 3,000 young people are studying at this very moment.
Remember also that this is the only university for nearly 100 kilometres around Rampur, and most of its students come from poor families who have nowhere else to go.
And please, spare me the tears over Nalanda. The same people who mourn a university destroyed a thousand years ago are ready to applaud as one is flattened right in front of them.
If the Muslim students don't move you, then think about the hundreds of non Muslim students who lose their education too. Because that is who actually pays the price. The students, every single one of them.
And they are not alone. Sikh leaders and Hindu teachers have stood at that same gate defending this place, which tells you it was never only a Muslim cause.
And while you are at it, look at the wider record. The number of government schools in UP fell from around 1,63,000 in 2017 to about 1,37,000 by 2024, close to a sixteen percent drop.
They are quietly closing schools that serve the poor, and now they want to bulldoze a university that serves thousands. So tell me honestly, who is really standing up for education here?
Maybe it really is Hindus who are in danger. Because once a government decides that education itself is disposable, no community's children are ever truly safe.
You cannot shut down a living university with 3,000 students inside it. Because it's you who taught us that it is the barbarians who demolish universities.
Who is the barbarian now?
Lolly Apa thank you. The Rampur municipality claim that prior approval for 28 out of 30 University Buildings was not taken. That kept silent for 20 years. This university was founded by erstwhile Dy CM, Azam Khan, who is in jail. Vindictive action against him.

Zoom, hello from Lolly Ramdas. Signed the petition. Why are they wanting to demolish this ?
And who are they
We will be the laughing stock of the world if this misguided intention is implemented.

Demolshing an Institution of higher learning is akin to destroying a place of worship. Take recourse to other means.

Two of my children studied at Lawrence School, Lovedale whilst Dev was Head Master. He was a tough disciplinarian and that is what boarding schools need.
My brother-in-law Dev Lahiri would have been 75 today.
In April 2000, after almost a decade as head, he was forced to leave the Lawrence School Lovedale. Not because the results were bad, on the contrary they were getting better every year, not because of the sporting or extra-curricular activities which were excellent, but because he chose to question the board and the powerful Old Boys network on the practice of rehearsing all day for three months for Founders Day at the expense of academics. The practice probably worked well in the late 19th century when the school's main purpose was to train young Englishmen to become soldiers in the British Indian Army but made no sense over a century later.
When he was forced out, 14 teachers gave in their resignations immediately with nothing on offer and followed him to his next adventure. And 20 years later that batch would still meet up and party and remember the good old days!
In 2019, the batch of 1998, the first batch of students who had spent all their Lovedale days with Dev contributed to gift a fitness centre to the Lawrence School. And dedicated it to the Rhodes Scholar who taught them how to "fill the unforgiving minute with sixty seconds' worth of distance run."
Dev will probably never be remembered fondly by school board members and many old boys, after all he made life so difficult by forcing them to accept and confront change.
But ask the non-teaching staff of every school he led, or the teachers, or the students...
It takes a special special person to ignite a young mind. Dev was that person.
I miss him.
The less said the better about most anchors. I don’t watch any TV channels with their boisterous programmes.
Ha, ha, moustaches have been replaced by beards (though not in the Army). When I was a young officer I competed in the ‘ Moustache competition’ on my units Raising Day. Never won a prize though. I am posting a recent photo of the winners standing with me.
We expect the Election Commission to be non partisan and correct this disrespect shown to a veteran.

Ali is living up to the family traditions.
My brother, Major Mohommed Ali Shah (Veteran) @MajorAliShah was conferred the Eastern Army Commander’s Commendation Card at HQ Eastern Command this morning.
This is his third such honour, having received his first while in active service.
What makes this truly rare is that he continues to be recognized as a veteran, recently also receiving the DG Assam Rifles Commendation Card for his incisive reporting on the North East. This recognition carries forward a proud family legacy-our father Lt General Zameer Uddin Shah @zoomshah was also conferred this same award as a young Major in Nagaland.
So proud of you, Ali! Jai Hind @majoralishah
