Consider donating to Armey Emergency Relief. If you even vaguely support the troops, that is one of the best ways to support troops in actual need.
Man, 60,000 followers calls for an Ask me Anything! What are your questions?
(and consider donating to Army Emergency Relief at the link below or sharing this post to spread awareness!)
As some of you know, I’m heading to DC in October to run the Army Ten Miler for Army Emergency Relief. They are the only official nonprofit of the Army and the money raised goes to Soldiers, their families, and Army Veterans.
Over the years, they have truly helped Soldiers in my formation. I have seen it first hand and wanted to help give back.
But in the meantime, what questions do you have? I’ll try and answer as many as I can while I drink some coffee!

Here’s the deal with social media:
If you know someone currently deployed: no you don’t
If your friend’s dad told you something about their kid: no he didn’t.
If your friend contacted you just to chat: nope. Didn’t happen.
Everyone on social media wants to have more information than everyone else so they can get engagement.
Don’t get people killed for likes.

One time our small outpost cooks made to many enchiladas so my team leader made me wear a Viking helmet and eat as many as I could while drinking shelf milk to wash it down. There was metal music playing in the background.
I believe now they call that hazing.

The experience these generous donors are providing young service members gives them a depth of appreciation for the history of their calling that’s hard to replicate. Thanks @EODHappyCaptain for again making this happen!

I don't normally like to tag all over the sphere here, but if people do not already know;
If you bank with NFCU or USAA, you must enroll in the shutdown assistance program by 10 OCT. The AER program ALSO opened as of this morning - 08 OCT. This is a SMALL window.
If you have Junior Soldiers - they are likely the most impacted. Please make sure they understand this timeline. This is due to the pay date schedule and when 'early deposit' would normally hit and the official shutdown/dfas timelines.
They have to enroll by Friday if they want to be paid 'as normal'.
In previous years this was 'automatic' and they didn't have to worry about it - they MUST actually apply this time around. I'm not pleased to have to do this, and I would prefer congress figure it out, but commentary from this afternoon indicates there will be no 'military pay specific relief' - and it doesn't appear the shutdown will end shortly.
Now it's time to do the military thing and do the best we can with the shit we've been handed.

What is an Apple Cider Donut?
It was brought my attention today that many of you do not know what an apple cider donut is, which is disheartening, so here you go.
Apple Cider Donuts originated in the northeast with the original colonies. Colonists had left over animal fat that they would use to fry, and leftover apple rinds that served no purpose. Since they tried to waste as little as possible this treat was created.
fast forward to the 1950s and a recipe appeared in the The New York Times. Essentially they are regular donuts, with added apple cider in the mix. they are then coated in cinnamon sugar. They are a staple of Autumn in the Northeast, and are amazing. They are available at farm stands, restaurants, and apple orchards throughout the area.
If you have never had one, I highly recommend looking up a recipe online.

One of my former Soldiers reached out today and asked me to be a reference. He’s super smart and applying to a good school. I’m insanely proud of him.

The day before I graduated Basic Training, my Drill Sergeant had us all sit down in the bay for a conversation. We all looked up to him. He took off his Brown Round cover, and talked to us for an hour about life, family, and going to war.
I wish I could remember everything he said. Time is the great blur of all conversations. But I do remember something he said very clearly:
“Get what you want out of the Army, because the Army will get what it wants out of you”
No one is going to push you to your full potential other than yourself. People will help, but at the end of the day it’s on you. Go be a pilot. Go be a doctor. Go to Special Forces Assessment. Go get your degree with tuition assistance.
The best part of the Army, and the military, is that you can be what you want. As long as you are pushing yourself physically and mentally there is nothing you can’t do.
(Go EOD. It’s pretty awesome, and we are hiring)

The Army is filled with everyday people who are willing to do incredible things to keep their friends and fellow soldiers in the fight. Most won’t make it into books, movies, or common knowledge. We have an obligation to share those stories.

Update: Just had an over 20 minute call with this soldier and I could hear the desperation in their voice. “I just want my own room, my entire life is essentially in my car where there is no cameras.”
Barracks manager and their sponsor is failing them to the extent that when this soldier tried advocate for themselves to a few NCOs the sponsor came down on them for talking about this behind their back.
I’m aware of the location but the solider is so worried about ruining his career that they’re not ready to share it. Any tips on navigating that would be great. I can empathize with them because it’s is easy to fire and forget but even harder to ensure repercussions don’t come back on the soldier.
These are just some of the photos of a temporary room that they were originally going to use. How was this room turned over like this?!
