On February 27, 2007, the FBI issued an intelligence assessment titled Muslim Sisterhood: Women Facilitating Muslim Brotherhood Activities in the United States.
The assessment identified the Muslim Students' Association, founded in 1963, as the first formal Muslim Brotherhood organization in the United States.
At the time this assessment was written, Abdul El-Sayed was serving as vice president of the University of Michigan MSA chapter.
