This hit hard. I so deeply miss the early days of my career where you could write an Airflow tutorial that would go viral. And when teaching people to use software was a beautiful and sustainable dialogue and practice 😢 borretti.me/article/no-man-i…

An M&A would produce UpDog
Sources: Datadog offered to buy Israeli cloud cybersecurity startup Upwind Security for ~$4B; Upwind is finalizing a $300M funding round at a ~$3.8B valuation (The Information) (Visit Techmeme dot com for the link and full context!)

If I hear one more person say "aura" I'm going to fucking lose it. Oh, you mean spineless groupthink? How you're not allowed to like a company unless it has enough fake internet points? Until all the terminally online incels on your stupid timeline give it their blessing? Yea man, only a few companies have aura, I can't really explain what it is or how they got it but if you don't have it you're going to die. Yea man, if you don't have an army of poasters making memes on twitter instead of working, how are you going to succeed man? Everything is happening on the feed, bro. that's where business gets done. If you're not winning here you're losing, bro. OMG, did you see the drama Jev got 50 million views on . It’s over for them. Oh yea man Etched is raising at $500B because of their twitter marketing videos. IDK, the cuck tranche was only at $1B, they probably went out to raise higher and couldn’t. Oh no, we can’t announce this seed round because the valuation isn’t $100T so nobody is going to care. Here's an idea. Why don't you try having a opinion? Why don't you develop an actual belief in one single fucking thing that everyone else doesn't also think. Why don't you form one single thought that doesn't shrivel up the second your swagless, internet-addicted mutuals don't shower it with love and "many are saying" astroturfing? grow the fuck up.

Great piece from @ayanobacter on optogenetics! A great reminder for anyone underestimating the complexity of novel science. - Science need tools to understand what we cannot observe. - And creativity to hypothesize and imagine what could be - Then experiments, reasoning, and persistence to create something new
My first piece for the @AmplifyPartners Writing Fellowship is out: The Fertility of an Idea It traces the lineage of optogenetics and argues that great science grows the way living things do, across time, people, instruments, branching and borrowing, and that this should shape how we build AI for science. I’m grateful to @dbeyer123, @madelynheart_ and @ElliotHershberg at Amplify for their time and support along the way, and a very big thank you to the inimitable @barsisyphus who edited the piece with lots of care.

The birth of optogenetics, whose pioneers won the Nobel Prize this year (!), is interesting because it developed almost randomly. The history of this field (from @ayanobacter) can help us truly understand discovery...and train better AI for science. amplifypartners.com/blog-pos…

Restaurant criticism is completely broken. On the one hand you've got Instagram influencers with 0 critical lens doing the Sister Snacking "run don't walk" routine, usually for free food. On the other hand, you have performative dismissal on Twitter (usually by self-labeled "hot girls") that's trying signal a blasé attitude but carries 0 substantive critique. What these both have in common is they know jack shit about food. Even at the higher levels of people who have more than single-digit brain cells, there is just so much antagonism and little respect. The substack drama with Le Veau D'or's bar director is a great glimpse into this usually closed off world. Restaurants don't really respect critics anymore, especially in the post Pete Wells era. In a sense they have been disintermediated and you don't need 4 NYT stars anymore to do well. It's crazy to read Lutece (the book), which was published in 1993. It was written by Irene Daria, who was a columnist for Glamour and followed Andre Soltner around for over a year, documenting the inner workings of one of the most respected restaurants in the world. You can see then how important the NYT review was. In any restaurant books set in this era (unreasonable hospitality, yes chef) there is immense respect and fear of the critic. Imagine the idea that the Eleven Madison Park staff would legitimately question their artistry because a newspaper critic had issues with her meal. But that's how it was. Meanwhile, Michelin has become a joke. Instagram is full of losers co-opting the term as a status grab ("how I make michelin quality stock at home"). The brand is moving down market to this nonsense Bib Gourmand moniker, and then even further down market to "a list" whatever tf that is. Media can't make money anymore, Eater is a shell of its former self, The Infatuation...remember them? At the idea's best, the critic provides an extremely valuable service to elite artists and craftspeople trying to improve in any way they can. A 3rd party, who can experience things externally, who has a respect for the craft but discerning taste. It's simply factual that some people are born with 99th percentile taste but not creation ability, and that these people can play a VERY valuable role working in partnership with artists. Two sides, leveling each other up via mutual respect. This died a long time ago.

One of the things that makes NYC so great is not just the highest levels of food, but the day-to-day that's available to you. For example, the smashburger at Törst would be the best burger in any other tier 3 metro area, but here is just a random place around the corner

The fact that birds of a feather just exists in Williamsburg to little fanfare, and you can just pick up food from there, is totally insane

We're getting closer.
Working on some new logo concepts for Sisyphus Bar and Grill. I'm happy with the typography, but still can't settle on a clever way to incorporate the rock or the mountain
