Halloween came early for animals at Whipsnade Zoo in England. Zookeepers used carved pumpkins and seasonal vegetables to create enrichment activities designed to encourage the animals' natural foraging behaviors.

For my English-speaking followers, let's get the facts straight about the Stubb–Støre call with Putin. New reporting from Finland provides important details missing from much of the international debate. Some of the initial accusations now look rather premature. First, why did the call happen? According to President Stubb, Ukraine's peace negotiations were close to collapsing last week, with relations between Kyiv and Washington in serious trouble. Finnish sources suggest there was even a risk of the US disengaging from the process. At Zelenskyy's request, Finland and Norway organised the Oslo talks with American negotiators Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, alongside other European representatives. The subsequent call to Putin was prepared with Ukraine and the US. According to Finnish sources, key allies were informed beforehand and briefed afterwards. Helsinki also wanted Ukraine to publicly confirm its support for the initiative. Zelenskyy has since explicitly defended the call and praised its transparency. Second, the controversy surrounding European coordination deserves clarification. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen accused Finland and Norway of acting independently and failing to coordinate with other European countries. But Stubb and Støre have both stated that allies were informed in advance and received detailed briefings afterwards. New reporting from Finnish news agency STT supports their account. There is an important distinction between not being informed, not being consulted on the decision, and fundamentally disagreeing with that decision. Frederiksen's criticism increasingly appears to reflect a disagreement over whether direct contact with Putin should happen at all, rather than simply a lack of notification. Her initial framing therefore risks creating a misleading impression of an uncoordinated diplomatic operation. Political disagreement should not be confused with evidence that Finland and Norway acted behind their allies' backs. Third, what actually happened during the call? Finnish broadcaster Yle and news agency STT have challenged the Financial Times' account of Putin delivering a lengthy history lecture to passive Nordic listeners. Their sources describe a substantive exchange in which Stubb and Støre questioned Putin about the upcoming Abu Dhabi negotiations and stressed that prolonging the war would not diminish European support for Ukraine. Freedom of navigation in the Baltic Sea, keeping maritime routes open and Russia's shadow fleet were also discussed. Finnish-Russian bilateral relations reportedly were not discussed at all. The parties agreed to keep the communication channel available. Fourth, the risks were understood from the beginning. Finnish sources say criticism and possible Russian propaganda exploitation were anticipated. One source described the initiative as values-based realism, which sometimes requires accepting political risks and their consequences. This was a calculated decision, not an improvised attempt to normalise relations with Moscow. Zelenskyy has also reminded critics that Putin's diplomatic isolation effectively ended with Trump's Alaska summit in 2025. Other European governments have maintained contacts with Russia, sometimes without comparable transparency towards Ukraine. Ukraine requested diplomatic assistance, and Finland and Norway responded in coordination with Kyiv and Washington. Supporting Ukraine for as long as necessary must also mean supporting it in the ways Ukraine actually asks for. That includes diplomacy. Europe needs military strength, economic pressure and diplomatic influence. These are complementary instruments, not competing alternatives.

Russia sank a commercial container ship traveling from Israel to Romania. Is it an act of war against NATO or a hybrid attack?
BREAKING: Footage showing an unmanned maritime drone approaching the Liberian-flagged container ship CONTSHIP JET (IMO 9348625) from the starboard side, preparing to attack, has emerged. The video was published by Bulgarian maritime outlet Maritime bg. The vessel was struck by three maritime drones and sank overnight in the Black Sea off Bulgaria’s coast. All 18 crew members were rescued.

If striking 11,000 targets and a months-long blockade failed to produce Iranian collapse or capitulation, what would a “short, intense” military campaign produce—other than Iranian and Houthi retaliation against shipping, pipelines, and airports, another oil price spike, more casualties, and further erosion of public and regional support for the war? If reports like this are just the umpteenth time since the April ceasefire that Trump has threatened escalation to get a “better deal,” more power to him. But if it’s an actual operational plan, it’s likely to prove as counterproductive as the previous rounds.

Fox: Why are you here this morning? Trump rally attendee: Well, in the late 70s, I was a little too young to go to South America for the Jonestown Massacre. But this is as close as I'll ever get, so that's why I'm here. There's nothing like seeing a cult right up front.

"Better to stand an hour in a field than risk never seeing the next hour." A Reuters camera crew traveled on an overnight passenger train between Odesa and Dnipro, documenting how Russian drone attacks are disrupting everyday life in Ukraine. On the round-trip journey, Reuters logged nine evacuations. Passengers have to leave the trains multiple times and wait outside in the darkness, wrapped in blankets, as Russian drones threaten the route. According to the state operator, Ukrzaliznytsia, Russia has attacked more than 1,700 rail facilities this year, including stations, locomotives and passenger wagons. Despite the danger, Ukraine's railway workers continue to keep the trains running. 📹: Reuters

Trump is reportedly planning to restart war with Iran after the election. Some of us have been briefed on the war plan. And while I cannot disclose any details, I can say this: the plan is insane. It will not achieve objectives and will set off a new cycle of escalation.

Rob, the hypocrisy is touting that Arab citizens can vote as a sign of democracy and inclusivity while treating their chosen representatives—even those who sat in the government only a few years ago—as unacceptable even as outside supporters of an alternative coalition…when the alternative is a government that includes racists and extremists and a national security minister who was convicted of supporting a terrorist organization; parties that want to annex the West Bank, settle Gaza, and expel Palestinians; and non-Zionist Haredi parties whose constituents largely refuse to serve in the military even in wartime. Obviously opposition leaders have every right to judge such a coalition as the “lesser evil”—but if that’s their choice, it is hard to point to Arab citizens’ right to vote as evidence of their meaningful political inclusion. I did not say this was an easy decision but if it's the one they make it would be a telling one.
A little humility, please. Choosing to govern with the support of #Israel's two #Arab parties may seem like a straightforward political calculus 6,000 miles away but let's not forget that the Joint List, by far the largest of the two, ran on a platform in which it described itself as "a genuine democratic alternative to the racist #Zionist consensus" -- meaning not just an alternative to @netanyahu but to the fundamental idea of the state. The @gadi_eisenkot-led coalition may ultimately decide to rely on their votes to oust the current government but let's not insult people who have devoted their lives to protecting Israel to suggest this is an easy or simple decision. And if they decide against that path, they may have a very good reason. For details: jointlist.org.il/en/platform…

OBAMA: The president wasn't even mad. About The Saddam Hussein comparison. That part didn't bother him. But he was very upset about The Cheesecake Factory. He took great umbrage. He said I didn't understand the work of the artisans in the White House. They mobilized a whole of government response to that joke. Not to inflation, but to that joke.

Netanyahu's handpicked loyalist to head Israel's internal intelligence agency, Shin Bet, just lit a post-election firestorm by raising allegations of widespread vote buying among Arab-Israelis. Central Elections Commitee ordered Shin Bet to investigate 'severe suspicions' within a week. Entire Netanyahu government & media mouthpieces already stating as fact that Qatar sent millions of dollars to influence the election. Clear bid to (at least) delegitimze Arab votes and (in extremis) call entire election into question & allege it was stolen. This is serious.

UK AISI is such a fascinating institution because more than any other effort of its kind it appears poised to become like the Delaware Court of Chancery: a phenomenally powerful institution resident in an otherwise unremarkable jurisdiction
NEW from me: Britain’s AI testing agency outguns US Britain wants to pour another £120 million — roughly $160 million — into a government lab that tests the world’s most powerful AI models, an infusion of cash that alone is more than 10 times the annual budget of its US counterpart. It contrasts sharply with the approach in the US, where federal efforts to evaluate AI are receiving far less cash and are shared by different parts of government. semafor.com/article/10/27/20…

South Africa has been in the grip of anti-immigrant protests and violence over its winter months, leading to the deaths of four foreign nationals - two Mozambicans, an Ethiopian and a Malawian. Tens of thousands more have been left in fear of their lives and livelihoods. Many have queued outside diplomatic missions in Johannesburg and Cape Town, seeking to escape from a nation that once styled itself a beacon of continental solidarity. This is not the first time South Africa has experienced xenophobic violence. What distinguishes this outbreak though is not just its unprecedented scale, but the widening demographic of protesters and the extent to which the violence has become politically organized. Read Kiri Rupiah's latest analysis on the rise of anti-migrant sentiment in South Africa for the autumn issue of @TheWorldToday, the international affairs magazine of @ChathamHouse.
