Climate analysis for Urana shows how stored soil water and rainfall pre-dry-climate-signal can buffer a dry finish.
If July–September rainfall tracks the El Niño + positive IOD median of ~70 mm, the season would still sit around decile 4 overall, mainly because May–June rainfall has already delivered ~105 mm.
The water balance is roughly:
30 mm stored pre-May
105 mm May–June rainfall
70 mm dry July–Sept outlook
= ~205 mm total water supply
Using a wheat WUE estimate of 24 kg/mm after allowing 60 mm for evaporation, this gives a yield potential of about 3.4 t/ha, with an economic target for nitrogen closer to 3.0 t/ha.
Some districts will be better placed than this, and some worse, but the key point is clear: stored soil water is valuable insurance when spring rainfall turns off.
I preiously wrote on X an analysis of the timing of climate signals and how timing matters - and this year is a point in case.
The wider consern for me is how long the El Niño + positive IOD remain "on" and the answer to that will play out in the 2027 spring if the signal is still "on" in late winter.

Capeweed challenges lentil production, particularly paddocks with pasture history. As lentil plantings expand and sowing occurs earlier, this project investigates capeweed and other broadleaf weeds management.

In this update, Sam North (Research Hydrologist & Soil CRC project collaborator) discusses our Burramine trial site, including how soil moisture sensors are being used to track water movement through the soil profile. He explains how researchers are investigating water infiltration, storage and drainage, and how soil constraints and different crop management practices, including cover crops, influence crop access to water. The findings aim to support the understanding of soil water availability and inform management strategies to make better use of stored soil moisture.

Great work Roberto highlighting glyphosate is best used alone rather than with spikes on ryegrass!!
Follow the thread for the finer details on why gly works best alone yet Grp 14 + paraquat or glufosinate + spikes are effective knockdowns @WeedSmartAU

In the presence of glyphosate resistant ryegrass the majority responded a robust glyphosate rate + spike would be their preferred effective choice.
In this study glyphosate + spike is actually the least effective strategy! See below a few photos and a new predictive poll.👇

Good old example of crop competition with Neo doing the job well outcompeting rye grass in a 450mm rainfall year 👍 @CropDoctor54 @WeedSmartAU @robbert115 @PBoutsalis @InterGrain1 @BrendanTorpy

Harvest is under way at the @DAFFgov Wagga Long Term Field Trial Site.
Harvest index samples have been collected from our PY432T and PY525G canola, prior to windrowing. Both canolas were sown 10 days apart mid April.

Five weeks of dry conditions at grain fill was enough to bring out crown rot symptoms in wheat, even after decent rain up until Sept (Mid North, SA).
Caught me by surprise, but fewer white heads and severely pinched grains than in drier years. No Victrato.
